Default bay bus beams....what's the diff
Re:: i'm so confused

this is from the bus boys site

210-40001DX Adjustable Beam, 1968 to 1969 $330.65 / $150.00 Core
210-40001EX Adjustable Beam, 1970 $330.65 / $150.00 Core
210-40001FX Adjustable Beam, 1971 to 1979 $330.65 / $150.00 Core

ok, so what is the difference? i know the spindles are different 68-70 with drum brakes and wide 5, and 71-79 for disc brakes with not so wide 5, but why 3 different beams? this has me perplexxxed

The difference is that the later ones blot up in a different location. The mounting plates are bigger. Also, the late ones have a power booster for the brakes that mounts to the beam.

There are a few other smaller issues.

I took the spindles off a '78 westy (small 5 lug disc) and installed them on Jamie's '68 Bay. The ball joints are the same, it's just the rest.

so i cant bolt a 69 beam into a '71? i should just change the spindles? the '70 only confuses me, did they change the mounts in '70 and add the booster in '71 for the disc brakes?

and if i wanted to run drums on a '71, just buy the '68-69 drop spindles and put them in the '71????

That's what I'm thinking.

And yes, it is a loteasier to just change the spindles.

if your workig on a bus you really need this book
amazon didnt have it but i got a copy at borders
ISBN 1-903706-14-9
How to Modify Volkswagen Bus: Suspension, Brakes&Chassis for High Performance
ive been workign on vws for years and once i got these books it took the guess work out of parts swaps from different models

http://www.bordersstores.com/search/...&srchType=ISBN

my 66 buts im running a 69 beam with a set of arikewld drop spindles for the late model bay window brakes (disks on front with vw parts) the rear i got a set of the 71 vw bus trailing arms, rear hubs from a 73 and tubular diagonal armsfrom a 69 they work great. that book is where they have all the part numbers for the swaps that book even has a pattern section for the custom brackets. the only thing its short on is trans options i want a heavier duty in my bus but im triing to fit in a 901 or bay window late model to hook up the engine ive been working on a Jetta TDI hopefully ill be able to tow with it at interstate speeds (cross country)

There's only one person who knows all of the ins and out of Bus suspension swaps AND has the parts right there on hand . . .

BANNER

I can feel the chills runnin up and down your spine from here.

He probably has one of those rare EMPI heavy duty Type II over-sized sway bar kits hanging from the rafters in his barn as well. Unopened, of course. NOS, most certainly.

the book came in today, and i gotta admit for $40, it really didnt impress me. not alot of detail and since it's a european book, alot of the techniques featured are based on parts available in europe. oh well
