Default Eric: Time To Learn On The Job

Hey guys,

So I've been watching you guys with your great projects and decided to jump in with both feet. Hopefully the image shows up below.

Bought the following off a guy:
  1. project car in pieces that hadn't been touched in 15 years
  2. one engine that is supposedly in good shape
  3. one engine that is not in good shape
  4. multiple extra doors
  5. 2 hoods

Additionally I just really like the oval rear windows and bought the back half of bug with an oval window.

By the way I'll be learning how to weld and wrench at the same time.

You guys have been pretty cool on the site so I'm looking forward to getting help.

Havin fun,
Eric

I'm dealing with the same issue most everyone here deals with: space.

I need to pull the body off and also minimize the space taken up. My garage is about 81" high.

I've built a platform, no wheels or legs yet to put the body on. When done it should roll over the floorpan and shock towers, but not the engine.

Part of the solution is to lower the floor pan. I've taken the extra plywood and the newly purchased router and cut 16 1/4" thick 11" diameter circles.

The first set of wheels are getting glued up. The plywood was 3/8" thick so I'm gluing 4 wheels to get to 1.5" thick. That is some thick heavy wood.

Should be strong enough to hold the floorpan, but let me know your thoughts.

All this work and I haven't even started on the actual car.

One of the fun aspects of this is that right now I get to buy new tools. A quick trip to Lowes the other night and I found the floor press below open on the floor. It was their last one and after talking with the guy I got a 10% discount.

With floor press in hand...

I glued up the rest of the plywood to get 4 fours wheels.

And drilled out the holes in the 4 lug bolt pattern.

For a quick reference the lug bolt pattern is 130 MM center to center.

The bolts are M14 (14 mm) with a fine thread (1.5 mm thread depth).

Things have been slow the past couple of weeks.

I put the four wooden wheels on and ran into a problem in the rear. The lower shock mounts sit about 1" below the bottom of the drum brake and the wooden wheels weren't raising the rear-rend far enough off the ground such that the lower shock mounts were rubbing on the ground.

Back to the drawing board and another round of cutting wheels was in order with a larger radius this time.

------------------------------------------------------------

Like most people I don't really have a shop to work in, just a small space in the garage. Everything has to be on wheels so I can move things in, out and around in the garage.

I did find a cheap parts bin on rolling wheels on amazon. It has 60 bins on a small metal frame.

It cost about $130. Harbor Freight has a similar item for about $10 cheaper this weekend as part of big sale they have.

I added lock washers as they didn't come in the kit.

When I got it in the mail and put it together it was straightforward. The one major issue was that the top didn't correctly fit; it was too long. To get around this I cut a piece of wood to fit and screwed it on top in place of the tray. Then I flipped the top over so that it will easily hold stuff like a parts tray.

------------------------------------------------------------

Finally I built a rolling wooden frame to put the body on. It is designed to roll over the floorpan so I can get everything back in the garage.

I ran out of time to get the body off the floorpan and onto the wooden frame. Hopefully, I can that done this week.

Just about ready to start on the car.

The body is off the car. Woo Hoo!

My wife... Kickin' a little VW @$$.

Actually my neighbor came over and we lifted it up on each side and got it onto the rolling platform.

Below are the rest of the parts I need to go through.

More pictures on the platform.

-------------------------------------------

Here a couple of many patch panels I'm going to have to clean up.
