Just so everyone knows. Jill is doing great. Her chemo is done and went great. Shrunk the tumor to almost nothing. She had a lumpectomy and everything looks great. The cancer did not spread beyond the one breast. She will have one more minor surgery right after Labor Day week and then 6 weeks of localized radiation to get any microscopic things that might still be there....but her prognosis is excellent.

She is feeling great and we are doing wonderful. She is fully supportive if me getting back on the Sled and getting it ready for the Invasion.

OK...time for a progress update!

No really! I actually made some progress on the the Sled today.

I even have pictures to prove it. Seriously!

About a month or so ago I started working with Phil from Metal Spinning Specialties down in New Zealand. I had seen some smoothy beauty rings he made for one of the Type 3 guys over on the Samba. They looked really nice and were a whole lot less labor intensive (for me at least) then welding up all the oval holes in the stock Type 3 wheels to get the look I wanted. The price was very reasonable so I commissioned a set. Well they arrived today safe and sound all the way from NZ. Beautiful pieces of spun stainless. Fit perfectly.

Before:

After: Instant smoothy wheel!

The rings just slip on to the wheel and are held in place by the stock hubcaps. So I had to grab a hub cap and try it out.

....but what is up with that allen head screw in the middle of this cap?

Oh yeah, that's right. I also worked with Phil to come up with a custom one-off bullet for the stock hubcaps. Also spun from stainless steel....

Phil welds a disk inside the bullet with a nut welded to it. Drill one hole in the hubcap and bolt it on. Fits perfectly inside the raised lip around the VW logo.

Here are a couple of other views....

and finally a shot showing them after the install on the Sled.

My plan is to powdercoat the stock hubcaps and the bullets chrome and clear. The stock wheels and the smoothy rings will be powdercoated to match the roof color of the Sled....Mountain Dew Green Metallic. After all that and with a proper attitude adjustment, should end up something like this...

Thanks Phil. Could not be any happier with the pieces. Awesome work!

See I told you I made some progress. Hoping these bits get me completely re-energized to get the Sled on the road. Stay tuned.

Not a whole lot of progress on the front air ride, yet. I did manage to score some bits for it. These are Ford(?) axle cut-offs and spider gears. The axle cut-offs are leftovers when they make custom shortened axles for tubbed cars and such. The nice thing is that they are splined and circlipped together.

I plan to machine the axle stub down to the right length and the right diameter to press fit into the end of the trailing arm. I will also weld it in to the trailing arm. Then I will machine the spider gear down so it can be welded to the airbag arm.

The splines will let me index the airbag arm relative to the trailing arm and get some fine tuning of the geometry. Should work out good.

Ordered the John Deere Green powder coat paint for the wheels this morning. It will be the base green for the wheels and I will have the roof paint color matched to it. Then both will get the same pearls and flake and clear over them.

I also lined up the sand blaster to get the wheels cleaned up. Going to try to drop them off tomorrow, assuming I can get the tires off tonight.

Got the tires off last night and dropped the wheels at the sandblaster this afternoon. Should be able to pick them up on Tuesday. Powdercoat should be here by then too.
