Took another crack at stitching up the door panel inserts today.

I am really happy with the results.

After sewing all the straight pleat lines, I marked and stitch around the perimeter of the insert shape.

And then trimmed them both up.

These trimmed panels will get glued and wrapped to the inner hardboard substrate. Then the leather wrapped outer hardboard substrate will get glued to the inner and the leather wrapped over the outer edges of both.

The z-armrests will also help hold it all together in the center when they get bolted on.

I need to get some DAP Weldwood Landau top adhesive before I can start assembling. I have a couple of options locally. Hope to pick it up tomorrow.

Picked up a gallon of DAP Weldwood Landau Top Adhesive today.

This stuff is great. Strong smell and highly flammable so I did the build up of the door panels in the spray booth at TechShop with the ventilation on.

I managed to get both door panels trimmed up.

Of course I had to see what the release handle and the armrest will look like on them.

I still need to steam out a few wrinkles, wrap the armrests with the grey leather, drill the mounting holes for the armrests in the panels and modify the bracket that grabs the tab on the door inner panel. I am very happy with the results!

Wow John, that looks better with the inverted Z than I expected. That idea is going to get stolen!

Still plugging away on some of the small stuff. Hoping to get into the garage and do some welding on Sunday.

The patterns for the side trim wings are in primer. A little more sanding and some top coat and they will be ready to go to Fred for casting.

I have also started the pattern for the grill teeth. I am planning on having them cast as well. I am thinking of just keeping them simple. Not sure yet...

and tonight I made a rough mock-up of the design for the steering wheel trim bar...

It is a stock Type 3 steering wheel with what will be a custom, cast aluminum trim bar/horn button. The bar will be fixed to the wheel. The recess in the center will have the horn button.

The bar will bridge the center of the wheel. I am planning a simple black center cap and will fill the channel for the original horn ring. The risers for teh new trim bar will be molded into the wheel and painted to match the rest of the wheel.

Pretty happy with the design and scale of it. Not to just make a pattern suitable for casting...

Looks good, as usual. Can you put some "dish" in it ? So it's not perfectly straight across ?

Explored a few other options for the steering wheel trim tonight...

First up is dishing the "wings" to match the shallow angle of the steering wheel arms...

and then I took the same thing and rotated in 90 degrees and channeled my inner Canasian...

I also looked at matching both angles of the steering wheel arms, much like the original VW half ring...

and finally the Canasian version of that one...

Thoughts and opinions welcome....

My vote is "matching both angles of the steering wheel". More finished with no gap under the centre. But the first "rotated" also because the build is SO radical gets a nod or two.

Can you rotate that 90 the other direction, to give it a "Hanging" appearance? I like the single spoke version best so far. Were it me, I'd try it with that spoke at the top as well, or maybe even to one side. BUt Single spoke calls for me.

I take it there's a Badge for the center as well? Gonna keep us in suspense on that part?

Won't do that. Want the top half of the wheel open to see the speedometer and other instruments. Might still do the single spoke at the bottom.

yes there will be a badge/horn button in the middle. WIll likely use it a few other places on the car too. Just finished up the design today.

I need to make a pattern and a silicone mold so I can cast them out of pewter.

I have to say, I admire the creativity that you show in this build. There will never be one like it. The emblem looks cool too. I guess the green is a continuation of the door colors and stuff... A Starkly contrasting color would be cool as well (Deep Purple or something like that, giving a Royal appearance). Everything you show makes me want to do similar things... only a little different. I have a feeling I will have a Single Spoke Steering wheel some day.

I like the look of the single spoke (ala Nick) but I can tell you from personal experience, it will flex a lot. I'm sure you can figure out how to resolve that though.

You should do a poll, and then do whichever one you like.

I'm iffy on the straight bar design. Maybe bend the wings but bot totally flush with the stock wheel...maybe half the angle between the stock bars and the flat version. (shallow dish)

Got a chance to play with the lasers over at TechShop after teaching my Waterjet class today. Lasered out the layers for the J2 emblem, got them glued together and mostly sanded.

Also picked up my mold making material this weekend. Going to make the mold in the next couple of days. Should have my pewter from Unkl Ian this week too. Then I can try casting one!

Poured the silicone mold for the emblem tonight! Built a small box for the mold and glued the master model into it.

Measured out the Smooth-on Oomoo 30...

Mixed it up and filled the mold box...

Now I just need to wait til morning to de-mold it and then I can try casting one in resin to see how the mold came out. Then when the pewter shows up i can cast the first "real" one.

Mold turned out great. I demolded it this morning and mixed up some Smooth-Cast 300 to do a trial part. It also came out of the mold great and looks really good. Now I am just waiting for the pewter...
