Default Steering column modification- VW bug help please!

Hi all,

Have a look at my build thread if you need more light shedding, but I'm building a box-section/ space frame chassis for mid mount ing a v8 under a bug. The front end is built up using a cortina steering rack and I was hoping to simply connect the stock column to this using a number of universal joints.
I've made a support bush to sit in the base of the column.
Can I get some opinions on how I've done so far?

The problem I have is the bug is a late one- and the stock column appears to be supported at one end by some H-section clips that slide onto a bracket fitted under the dash. The column is free to slide back, towards the firewall, if the column itself isn't held at the steering box. Here's a pic of the bracket;

As the other end is no longer held by the rubber flexy/steering box, and is now only supported by the U/Js, this leads to movement of the column when turning. Is there any way the earlier column can be retrofitted? The current bracket seems to be held on with tamper-proof bolts of some sort......
