Default metal engraving

Crew,
Anyone know anyone that can do custom metal engraving, preferably CNC or laser. I need some stuff engraved in steel about 1/32" with a V channel. It has to be VERY accurate.

Do you need the engraving on the inside of the "v" or on the outside?

Lets see, it's been a little over 30 years since I have done any type of engraving in metal, I did a piece of brass sheet that I cut out to fit onto the dash of my 74 Cutlass, I borrowed a hand engraver used for marking your name on tools & tooling we made in my junior year in Machine Shop class, I wanted all the panels brass, so I took the tool home & begane to slowly engrave the markings that were on the stock plastic piece I was replacing, I don't have the piece of brass I did, but it turned out much better than I expected it too, then again my hands were much steadier than they are today, I wouldn't even think about trying anything of that sort today

I'm sure if you can't find anyone on here to do it, try looking in the yellow pages, I may be able to find a guy to do it, he most likely wouldn't give me any kind of discount, but if you know what you want I can ask around, my one friend knows people who do just about everything imaginable when it comes to metal working, hell he may even have something, I'll give him a call sometime today to see if he does have anything, or if he knows anyone who can do it

No, the V is the cut of the engraving itself. Lets just say I need it to look like it was stamped and not engraved but needs to have a specific height, width, depth and spacing. I'll leave all of you to your own devices on this one...

I'll have to check to see if they can 1. do steel. 2. do an exact font and size that I need. 3. Do it deep enough.

That's funny you say "thirty dollar bills" cause when my wife hands me a twenty, I always tell her it's not enough, "I need a thirty dolla bill" is what I say

I would suggest electro etching.. But that requires dunking the piece in copper sulfate and then a bunch of other steps, but even then the results are the Antique style of etching they used to make printing plates....
but i'm not sure....

I might check into something like that. It needs to be sharp and deep. I contacted a guy about laser cutting. He said I would need to find someone with a Yag or Fiber laser. Anyone got a source?

As far as I know, the copper sulfate dip will pretty much just turn raw carbon steel (pretty much anything non-Chrome plated)... copper in color. We use it to find breaches in Chrome plating on Shock Pistons and cylinders for Aircraft Landing gear and actuators, nearly daily.

I guess it could be some part of a longer process for etching, but it's pretty cool to turn something copper before your eyes. Makes the missing chrome stand out like a sore thumb in seconds flat.

Well if this is for your steampunk ride turning it copper wouldn't be a problem would it

Though, theres plenty of ways to do it. http://www.instructables.com/id/How-...l-for-Etching/

That should give you a brief idea.

Its pretty versatile. The only factors are time and voltage. You need to make sure your masks are clean though. if I had access to brass and model A wheels i'd be making my car steampunk.
