Default Punks Latest Project
Re:: Finally Gettin' A Bus

Now most of you Cali, Arizona, Texas and other warm/dry area people may look at this and say "Shee-it, that thang ain't even worth the effort to part out". Well, up here in the North East, this bus is damn near mint!!

Looks like I'm going to pick it up next weekend. There is a little more rust than I thought but it's nothing that can't be fixed.

I'll let you find the bad stuff for yourselves but I want to point out some of the good things.

The dash is uncut, the nose is pretty damn good, it's never been hit, both the front and rear bumpers are there and other then the passenger side rocker, a little perforation on the cargo floor and drivers side rear corner, there is very little rust.

I'm not too fond of the cargo door windows but they will do for now. I have a few friends (my Rent-A-Friend payments are up to date) I can talk to about tracking down parts so I'm not too worried.

I can't wait to get this thing home and the weather to clear. I have a feeling I'm going to make Chuck a rich man with the Master Series I'm going to need.

Here are a few of the pics.

I'm pretty stoked!

H*ll that aint a lot of rust! We all have definatley seen worse. At first glance of the first pic it looked like it was a camper top or something Then I realized it was snow
Im not used to seeing that stuff down here in alabama.
What all have you got planned for it??

I think it will run a lot better with the engine in the back rather than behind the seat!

Looks like you have your work cut out for you, although a lot of elbow grease cleaning it up will do wonders.

Nice score. A local was wanting to trade me his 61 turkis kombi for the vert...I should have done it. It needs a lot more than yours though.

Rusty? That's just a lovely patina of age. Man I've seen worse out here on the road. She is going to be one great project. That transverse engine is rather unusual. Is it the traditional chain drive setup?

Actually, I got my last tetinus shot in 2007 when I put a piece of .020 wire through my hand at work.

Grumpy, I think I could have saved a lot of money on shipping if I had just kept all those parts.

I will let you know what I need anything. I think I may need to take another trip to see that '59 in the woods again.

Fungus, you got screwed buddy but DAMN, you do nice work. I'll be asking a lot of questions when the time comes.

Don't know what you paid, but, looks like a SWEET Score Man! Anything you find in N.E. area is rotted worse than that one for sure! What year is it? I see it's a Walk-thru, Barn Door (I think), very nice! What are the plans? Totaly Original, or modded up a bit? Please tell!

PPE, I may have windshield glass but dropped spindles are definatly on the list. Trades are always good since cash is once again going to be tight but I'll be posting some early bug stuff for sale once I get this home.

Right now I plan on attacking the rust first. I've been putting together a dream list of sheet metal on Wolfsburg West. I'm going to check with local guys first on this stuff to save cash I don't have.

I plan on dropping it. I have a 67/68 bug tranny in the portable garage as well as a full set of new type3 rear brakes. The dropped spindles are on the list. New front brakes will be installed as well. I want to be able to stop before I am able to go.

I will install the 1641 Berg engine in it (sorry Nate, you're still not getting it). The cargo door windows will be replaced at some point.

I'd like to narrow the front beam at some point. I'll keep an eye out for a spare one so I can build it and not lose too much driving time (Andy, please add that to my list).

That's about it for right now. Any suggestions are welcome.

Up-grade the Master Cylider to a dual circuit.

When you lower the rear, will you be using IRS, or Swing? I know you said you have a 67/68 Tranny already...

Will you be doing Safari's?

Looks like there's alot of Master Series in your Future. That stuff works GREAT!

If you pass on the glass, I may need some at a later date, mine is all foggy around the edges...
