Been there, had that done to me. A couple of months back, a "friend" who I had helped on his projects in the past, ran into me in the local hardware store and asked me to drop by on the way home. Turned out he has an old 4x4 Ford project and wanted to know when I could come by swap in a new rear axle and front diff. for him. As his mechanical skills suck, he offered me a hundred bucks.
When I asked why he didn't take it to a mutual friend's shop in town, he replied, "Well, he's expensive."

Expensive huh, and he wanted to give you a $100.
For that much I would have loosened all the bolts and that's it, IF I was feeling good I might have dropped the rear axle, but I wouldn't waste that kind of energy unless I knew that person would drop everything to come help me if I was on a tough spot, I'd help my brother do something like that for free, and there's only about 500 feet between his house and mine, and we're brothers

Your friend with the 4x4 has no idea what it takes to do what he wants

Back in 1985 I bent the rear axle housing in a 1970 Delta 88, I knew a guy that was a mechanic at the place I got gas all the time, he wanted $350 to change the rear end, I said hell with that, pulled the 455 out of it, my grandpa bought it new, gave it to my mom, she gave it to me when the front suspension was shot, it had around 150,000 miles on it when I pulled it, I bought the 74 Cutlass from a friend for $100, he blew the original 455 that was in it and his parents wanted their garage back, I drove it for 10 years, raced it on just about every Friday night at the local 1/4 mile track for 3 years and drove it to and from work every day until the body mounts rusted out, it has around 375,000 miles when I took it out, it had 130 psi when I did a copression check before I pulled it, one day I hope to rebuild it and put it in something, I put it in my 66 Bug before the Ford engine, it was just to heavy or it would still be in it, I may get heavy duty springs and put it back, who knows

Sorry for rambling on

Ron

"Sorry for rambling on." I enjoy reading the various mechanical tales of the group here. Keep it up.

Another screwed up day with my Volksrod, yesterday afternoon on the way home from my wife's work a csr pulled up next to me at a red light, he said my brake lights were out, so when I got home I checked all the fuses, good, then I checked my lights, brake lights were good but my left tail light was out, my tail lights started giving me problems a few months ago, I couldn't figure out where the connection was bad at so I ran a wire from the Battery terminal on the generator to a switch and to the lights, the brake light switch looked like it was dirty, so I pulled the wires off and cleaned everything up real good and when I hooked them back up they were on, the only problem was I was standing behind the car and nobody was holding the pedal down, when I got in and stepped on the brake pedal the brake lights went out, WTF, so I looked around to see if I had an extra brake light switch but couldn't find one, called the parts place and they couldn't get one till 9 am this morning, I leave at 5:30 am to take my wife to work and had to visit the Vampire's Office since Tuesday is my 3 month check up time, I pulled the one wire off so my battery wouldn't go dead overnight, hooked it up in the morning before making my rounds and hoped anyone behind me would be able to figure out when I was stopping and no police would get behind me, I made the 35 mile round trip and it was almost 9 when I got close to the parts store, got the new switch and new tail light and now I have brake lights that work properly, I also tracked down where the bad connection was to the tail lights and fixed that too

I think it's time to replace the entire wiring harness with one of these
https://www.dubparts.com/products/re...deluxe-bug-kit

Anyone used one of these and if so how was it?
I've rewired my 66 Bug years ago when I changed it over to 12 volt so I know what it takes to replace it, the only thing I didn't see about that kit was whether it had an intermittent windshield wiper switch, that's about the only thing that would make it better, but I'm sure I ould install a switch from something else for the wipers, if not I'll just keep using the manual intermittent wiper switch I've been using for the last 36 years

Electrical always sucks. My food trailer lost all running lights a few weeks ago. The plug was getting hot and would blow a fuse in the van once in a while. I pulled any recent screws that I had installed I case I drilled into a wire. Still no good. Finally I pulled a panel down to take a look at actually just running new wires. And there it was, the aluminum ceiling pinched a wire. I'm actually vending at a microbrewery right now.
Ok, I'm back had a customer. Lol. I've been dreading towing at night. Hazards or one tail light. Now it all works.

Yeah electrical problems suck, it's so nice to start from scratch.
I always pulled the entire wiring harness out of all the Bugs I had before getting rid of them, I took all the best wires out and used that when I rewired my 66, I can't seem to find it, but I know I have it somewhere in my garage, I found the wiring harness for my rail buggy and I think I'm gonna pull the engine and trans out of my son's Honda and put it into the rail
Then I hope to buy one of those new harness kits and do my Volksrod next spring, I think I'll hafta buy a new turn signal switch as well, the right side doesn't work and the left side stays on until you manually turn it off, I've driven a few miles with it on, I need to fix the indicator light in the speedo, guess that can wait until I replace it all

Good to hear you got your trailer straightened out, can be scary when back lights don't work right

fucking fuck.

So, if you don't know, I moved from Virginia to Maryland in July due t new military orders.. Our Virginia house has been on the market since like April..

It has a market value of like $260k, so we first had it up for $250k (we still owe $190k..) and between then and now, we chipped it down 5k and 1k at a time until september when we pulled the listing, waited a week, and relisted it at $229k..

We finally got a buyer, and are supposed to close on November 7th, but our realtor just fucking noticed today, after everything has been signed and done, that their asshole realtor had a list of like 30 items we needed to fix/replace in the normal spot, but had also slipped in 5 items on another random fucking page..

get this shit, we now have to paint the entire interior (2400 sq ft) plain white, even though we JUST fucking painted like 60% of the interior before it went to market. they want a samsung dishwasher to match the fridge/freezer combo, oven and microwave. replace ALL the bathroom mirrors (there's nothing wrong with the ones up, not broken or anything), and replace new carpet of the buyer's choice..

after everything else, we were looking at turning a profit of about $6,000... now it looks like we may come out in the hole about $15-20,000

Our realtor called their guy, and he's just like, "well, it was there the whole time" like being shady as fuck is totally ok.

FUCK!

that is all.

Themore I hear about Shady realtors, the more I think taking one of the Home flipper offers with "AS-IS" in the contract... I won't be doing anything at all for about 5 years though, and if it's that way then, I'll be considering it an option. If I were Pariah, I'd sue my realtor for not having my back... that's THEIR JOB to handle that stuff.... they're getting paid for it... and VERY WELL PAID I might add... They'd be eating their commission if I got a lawyer... at the very least if not more.

Pariah, I feel your pain. Except mine is with roofers not realtors. I just got $7800 worth of new roof that must be removed due to faulty workmanship which voids any warranty. Damn roof is only two weeks old but looked a bit odd so I hired an independent inspector and he gave me the bad news. Only good thing is I have not paid the roofer but it looks like it is going to court.

Roofers...shit. We' had a leaking skylight which projects up about 18" from the slope, and drip beneath where three sections of roof came together. With five years left on the warranty, the roofing company which had redone the whole thing several years back, told us that there had been a recall with some of the material and the warranty was no good. This was after they denied doing the work until I produced a copy of the receipt.
An second roofer quoted us eleven grand to fix the half of the roof with the skylight and the drip spot. Another contractor quoted us a grand and a half to remove the skylight (they always leak, he told us), but not take care of the drip area.
Though waay back, I ran a roofing crew, because I'm now pushing seventy, didn't want to deal with it. But, I figured I'd give it a try. It took me about six hours to replace the material around the skylight with hand formed 20 ga. galvanized sheet metal. And, fix the 'drip area.' More sheet metal and some sealer. Two weeks ago a rainstorm hit us with about an inch of rain. All went well and my wife was thrilled. Total cost, about forty bucks in metal and some trick sealing material.

These roofing stories are why I will be looking for my next house with a simple roof... no crazy rooflines and hips and valleys if possible. No need in all that fancy roof crap unless you are just in the mood to show off... I too was a roofing guy for several years and it's not difficult to understand how to divert water... it's just hard work and at an incline. Sometimes an Awful incline as well (I've done a lot of steep roofs too)... when I bought my current home we looked for simple roof as well. I have 3 separate planes... nothing fancy at all. Just one Chimney (full brick fun stuff)... and only one ridge the full length of the house. Super simple.

Man... You guys are scaring me on this home hunt thing... I'm already getting started and gathering info on the issues that can arise... from roofs to property drainage to termite areas and such... I hate bushes completely against the house... suspicion of Termites comes up really fast.

Ya know I can remember my grandpa saying about skylights and roofs, if you hafta cut a hole in the roof for anything it's gonna leak sooner or later
I was given a skylight that opens for my garage, I'm gonna put it in a wall so I have a window

I'm glad both my sons are roofers, I know I mentioned it last November about the tree limb falling thru my garage roof, it only cost me $300 in labor to have my youngest son and 2 of his helpers fix it, they replaced the entire section that I added on back in 07, it's about 14 feet by 32 feet with very little pitch, when I built it I used shingles which wasn't a good idea, I had to seal all the shingles because when we would get a storm the wind blew water up under them and it caused a few leaks until I fixed it, they replaced it with some new stuff for flat roofs, cost me a little more than $700 for materials, since then we've had 50 mph winds with torrential rains and it's still water tight, altho I need to get up there and cut some tree branches and 2 trees down that are hanging dangerously over my garage, I'm gonna hafta climb up and top off the ones hanging over it, not sure if I wanna do it with a chain saw though, I guess I'll get to it after the leaves fall off

I installed some Membrane roofs a long time ago. They're GOODYEAR rubber and some sort of Vulcanizing sealer that was chemically activated. rolled the sealer on one both halves and sprayed an activator on the two areas and played them together gently and rolled them flat together and the stuff is still in place after probably 25 years now... good stuff.
Works great for that "Nearly flat" stuff.
