Default turn aluminum black?

I know I could paint it,but I know it'll flake or scratch. Is there a product or substance out there that'll blacken some alum. parts?I'm low budget and powder coating is not an option.I could swear I accidentally did it to something long ago but cannot remember how

check out the powdercoating setup from harbor freight, its only $69. powder is around $8 FOR 1/2 lb. i have the H.F. gun, and the one from eastwood, $400+/-, and the cheapie works 100% better! you can use your house oven, (electric) i have for several projects. this is not dirt cheap, but u can coat about 10 sq. ft. for less than a coating shop would do a bolt head for you! jason

By Anodizing you can basically chose what colour you want... And make it last..

Have you considered anodizing the aluminum?

Here's an article on how to do it at home:
http://www.warpig.com/paintball/technical/anodize.shtml

BTW, landlords and spouses frequently come unglued when you use the kitchen oven to bake powder coating . . . .

use oven cleaner. that's what you would use to remove anodizing and if you keep it on too long it'll tarnish the alluminum. i doubt it'll turn it midnight black but at least dark grey? also, there was a crock pot/hot tank thread on the hamb a while back that said to soak parts in simple green in a hot pot. they mentioned not to do this to aluminum parts as it would discolor them, maybe that's worth a try too.

the oven cleaner will soak into the pores in the aluminum and weaken it, thats why if you use it to etch parts you have to neutralize it with baking soda...

awe just heat it up with the torch and dunk it old motor oil, blacken's everything......

To paint it and have it lats you'll have to get a good self etching primer like zincchromate, then you can use a regular primer over it and paint, we used it in the shop alot! kinda like having two different set of body hamers for steel and aluminum just gotta prep it alittle different..
