Well, if cheaper is better... you won't come anywhere near the monster engine that's in that car.

If you're trying to stay budget minded, but still want a little "more than stock" power under the decklid... I'd suggest a 1776 or maybe even a 1904. I'm a big fan of the 1776 due to it's decent power and the dependability you get from it, giving you MANY miles ahead.

How "cheap" are you talkin'??

Like they say... "Cheap, dependable, fast... pick 2"

If money is an issue, then a stock 1600cc engine should be fine. You can dress them up nice with duel carbs, paint and/or chrome and it won't rape your wallet. Or you could always step it up to a mild performance with something like a 1776cc but generally the bigger you go, the more it costs.

Welcome to the site and keep us updated on your project. Please feel free to ask more questions, that's what we're here for.

My first suggestion as far as the entire car goes, is to make sure that you go through your brakes and make sure they match whatever engine you decide to go with. If you're going with a bigger engine and a lighter body (after removing fenders, aprons, etc)... you're going to want to make sure those are up to par before hitting the road.

Take it from me, a turbo system can be expensive. Fully balanced engine, turbo prepped carb(s), special grind (mild) cam, then the turbo system.
Not really thae way to go if you're on a budget.

You don't ask much do you?:)

First rebuild all (ALL!) of the mechanicals of the car.

Brakes.
suspension.
Bearings.
1932 ford front suspension? thats expensive. Try one of the 'beam extenders' mentioned in this site, or build your own. it's not terribly difficult if you have the skillz.

Big tires. white walls maybe?

Transmission?

Motor? a STOCK 1600 with single or dual port heads? Stock is cheap. factory VW dual port engines will produce 40+HP when rebuilt correctly. Stock carb, cam etc. You can always build a bigger engine later.

Then start on the body.

Chop top.

Maybe suicide doors (open backwards)?

Smooth the fender well areas (all the chrome holes and fender bolts)

slap on some bondo and flat black paint.

VIOLA!

should take you about 6 months of spare time and around 3-5000 US to do it right:)

good luck! and make sure to show us pictures of your progress!

Well I'm glad the KCW car brought new people to this style of VW even though I dont like the car. To those of you giving smartass replies get a map and see how far away Argentina is.

I hope this dosent burst your bubble. What does it say?
http://www.flickr.com/photos/noryjp/.../pool-vwsedan/

Are you new to VW's and do you have a car yet?

I think the earlier the car the better but I dont like chops on '57 and earlier cars partly because they already look choped and the windshield never looks right if you chop it. I know you probably wont have any big window cars('65 and later in USA) around there. Those are my favorite chops. Look for the Goldfather if you have this months HotVW's.

Most people put an early hood and deck lid on their car because they dont square off at the bottom so you may want to start w/ '66 and earlier but it wont be hard to put them on a later car because only the apron is different and you wont have them.

It would be good to let us know what your budget is. Look through old post for answers to most of your questions.
