Default lil' rodder

Hello. My name is Guss, and I figured that I would get this intro thing out of the way early. I'm from Bristow, Ok where I live with my parents and two younger brothers. My dad and I are going to be building me a volksrod over the winter and into next year. Hopefully it will be finished by early summer '08. I've been into volksrods for about three years now, which is kind of cool as I'm only four years old.

Here is what I have to start with. It's a '70 that is in rough shape and was fromerly named "The Nasty" by it's previous owner. With any luck, we will be changing that real soon. Anyway, onto the first pics...

So there's what we have to start with. We will update as progress goes along. Hopefully it won't be to long.

Well, dad finally got his truck taken apart and set to the side of the shop. Now it's my turn. We still have a little clean up o do, but we should be ready to start on my hot rod by the end of this week.

Dad needs to get a new regulator for the air compressor so we can work longer b/t cycle times. And it will also allow us to paint it in the shop. I'll get dad to post up some pics later because I'm not allowed to touch the camera.

See ya,

Guss.

Last night dad had some friends come over to get a starter so we didn't get much done in the shop. We did get it cleaned a little, but not much. Hopefully the shop will be clean enough to start on my hot rod this weekend.

Well, we finally got the bug in the shop and got some work done.

First we pulled the front tires off, then the front brake drums. Then I got the front fenders off. I know it's not much progress to some of you, but hey! I'M FOUR!!!

Just updating this with pics since it's been a long time.

First we sectioned the body 12" by taking 3 4" pieces out of the colw area, and checked to see how it fit.

Then daddy built a body dolly that is 30" from the floor so he wouldn't have to bend over so much.

Next we sectioned 12.5" out of the door length, and retested the fit.

With the door length right, it was time to section the heigth. Here we sectioned it by 9.5". Once that was done, we retested the fit. This time with me sitting on the sawzall box as a make shift bench seat.

And tonight we cleaned up the cuts from the section job and made the flange weld places in the doors. I'll have to get some pics and load them up tomorrow.

We didn't have a lot of time to work on my hot rod this week. today is really sunny and nice outside, but soon as momma gets back from school (about 30 more min.) daddy has to go work on a Focus for a guy. Tomorrow it is going to get cold again, so who knows when we'll get back to work on my hot rod.

But we were able to get the frame for the floor of the cab fully welded in place. we also centered the cab on the main frame and started making the cab mounts. They will be just like real cab mounts on big trucks. There will be six of them (three per side) with a 1/2" rubber bushing and a 3/8" grade 8 thru bolt. The blots will go in from the top and be hidden from view for a cleaner look.

If we make any real progress this weekend, I'll be sure to update with pics.

Storms are moving in fast so we had to leave the shop and turn the weather on.

We have the cab mounts all made and welded in place on the frame and the other 1/2 on the cab "floor frame". With the cab mounts finished off, it was time to grind down a few welds, and remove a little remaining heater channel material. We needed all this done so we could start putting in the floor. Well, we have the floor on the drivers side fully welded in place, and the pieces for the other side are cut out and ready to be welded in. That's when we learned about the chance of having tornados tonight.

Needless to say, we didn't take any pics. We just turned everything off and got ready for bad weather. Well post pics tomorrow. Sorry.

Last night daddy got me some 4" headlights.

FREEBEE!!!

They are "utillity lights" from a 1941 JohnDeere tractor. Because of how old they are they are real rusted. Daddy had to clean them up really good with the bench grinder wire wheel, but after all that time out side they are not pitted at all. The glass is still good and all the wires are good too. We have to get new bulbs that are 12 volt so they will work, but two new bulbs are on the way.

I have pics of one before and after cleaning. We are going to get them primered and work on the new mounts sometime this week or next.

Lightbulb Re: lil' rodder

Here's the pics of the lights daddy got for my hot rod.

The glass is all good, but really dirty.

and this this is what the outside looked like.

Then daddy took them apart and hit the metal parts with the wire wheel.

He also cleaned the glass the best he could.

Then he shot a coat of primer on them, but it's still to early to handle them. We get better pics inside than in the shop, so I'll add pics of the primer pieces later.

It's not been a good week for daddy in the shop. He's been working on other stuff. Monday momma had class. Tuesday, he cut out letters for a friend at work and on Wednesday he welded them into signs for the guys driveway. Last night he took the night of. And early this morning, he started working on a pump mount plate for one of the oil wells. He has to have it finished by tomorrow morning. Then he has to rebuild a steering column from a '73 Bronco for another guy. So there may not be a whole lot of progress on my hot rod for a few days. But daddy says sometimes ya have to work in crooked lines to make sure everything comes out straight. I have no idea what that means, but that's why he's the daddy man and I'm Guss.

Daddy just said not to worry. He has the stuff to finish the pump plate, and the stuff to make a little more progress on my hot rod.

Now we just need to find the time to get everything else done so we can work on it again.

It's been a while, so this might take some time. We don't have any pics as we haven't really been working on my hot rod the last week or so. Daddy did get the pieces for the radius rods cut and bent. We still need to weld them together, but he wants to have the radius rod mounts cut out before we weld them so they fit right. We are also waiting for the clevises and rod ends to show up.

We played around with bending the front axle, and feel that we can get it done right doing it our selfs. Might work on that tomorrow. Momma is going for a "ride along" with an OHP tomorrow, so it will just be us guys.

The cut lines for the front hood are also laid out. Daddy has been worried about this part. If it isn't right, the whole thing will look bad, so it has to be perfect.

As most of you know, daddy got the new rear wheels and tires from Rumblewagen this week. The clock daddy painted for him was cool too. Tomorrow he said we might get to paint on one of the walls of his new office. Painting on the walls without getting in trouble!

Back to the hot rod... We also have the pieces for the exhaust all cut and ready to be welded together. It will look good I think. I'll see if daddy will take a few pics tomorrow after we check the wells.

Daddy just called and said that the spring pivots and shackles got here today. So we may be putting the front axle together this weekend.

We have a lot of other things to do also though, so no promises.

Worked on the axle...

We also worked on the hood.....

I have some other pictures, but daddy hasn't put them on the computer yet. I'll see if he will do it tonight.

Time to update the pics in this thread...

Test fit of the hood, and front tires. Found out that the tires are not going to work...

We reworked the hood and ground down the welds....

Then we installed the finished spindles, and roughed out the radius rods on the front....

And we roughed in the front quarter panels.....

After that, daddy took the old tires off the rims and painted them two tone Mint Green and Ivory, and installed the new front and rear tires....

Then we began working on the rear of the cab.....
