Default Call me Rattakus
Re:: Intro

Howdy all I am new here. Many years ago when I was a child my father was stationed over in Germany and used to race Bugs. Thats the first time I feel I became interested. Now move ahead almost 30 years, I baught my first VW (it was actually a gift for my wife because she really wanted it for some reason) a 66 Baja my kids lovingly call Pumpkin. So as I continued to work on her car I still drove a piece of Sh*t GEO Metro. Thankfully that car died I now have a 2004 Jetta Wagon. All this time I have wanted an older VW of my own though preferably a 68 or 69 Ghia. That however is not to happen for now. My boys Malachai and Eli have been reading my Hot VW mags and really get into me working on Moms car that they decided they wanted to help me build a new car. Being the loving father I am I asked them what they had in mind, the answers ranged from Ghia to Bus to a Volksrod. Well I have been searching The Samba and Craigslist when I came across the right one. So yesterday I went out to the guys house looked at and drove off with a 65 bug with a good pan and a nice straight body. So with the decision being made I now have a project car that needs to turn into a Volksrod. The only problem is I have no clue really where to start. Here she is though.

So after taking these pics and posting them, it was time to actually start and get to work. We went out and started striping the car. The wiring harness was the original one and was all brittle, it so had to go. pulled out the fenders and cleaned them up so I could sell them, and make some of my money back. The rear windows are still in and will probably come out tomorrow after work. The boys did a good job of cleaning up the parts g the parts and picking up behind me. Lets see how long the fascination lasts with them.

Day two of working on my new toy. So last night after my oldests recital I decided to start taking the body bolts out. I have most of the passenger side done, and figured out what I want for my b-day. A compressor and tools.

Life could not be better today. My father-in-law picked up an Oval Window Clip for me today for $80. Here are the pics from the ad. Now all I have to do is get down to his house to pick it up.

Alrighty. The wife is going with the kids down to her dads house over this comming weekend. This means I get my clip and can almost start cutting. In the meantime I have done some work and taken the body off the pan, the front end is off and the rear end is being held on by three of the most stuborn ass bolts I have ever come accross. The wife whined that I stopped working on hers so I got her an idiots guide to VW and told her since she wanted an old car she should learn how to work on it. Here are some pics.

After a long weekend of being on call and not being able to drink, I still managed to get the damn rearend off with some help from the kids down the street. Since I will be able to drink again tomorrow night I plan on having a beer and actually taking all the spare parts down to their basics in prep for sale. I plan on compiling a list and putting it out so if any one is interested in parts leave me a note. The sooner I sell parts the sooner the pan can go in for some needed treatment. Found a bed liner place that quated me a fair price to prep and coat the whole thing. Then it will be on to making a low roll cage that will be right below the windows, so when I cut the top off I should have some nice support.

So the wife brought home the oval clip from her dads (Thanks Dad) and I purchased some paint stripper. So I figure since I am having oral surgery tomorrow and with the pain pills they are going to give me (they bring out my OCD like mad) I plan to get the house cleaned up, the videos organized, and the car either stripped of paint or the rest of the parts disassembeled and cataloged. On top of that I am wondering wether I still want light blue flames or three color pinstriping (white and two lighter blues.)

Default Back to the back window.

So we cut out the back window as well as the front and back areas. Now we need to tac on the Oval back window so we can finish cutting the back. Came up with some new ideas for the deck lid but I will leave that for a surprise. Also made a pick-and-pull find for the back seats. Found two jump seat out of a 86 Nissan King Cab that are exactly what I was looking for. They are off being sandblasated at the moment. All I need now to move forward is a cheap block so if anyone has a spare sitting around drop me a line. Now to the picks.

So the top is off and we have been shopping and other things. Today my buddy Steve who has been helping me (doing most of the work actually as I have no clue what I am doing) stopped a tow truck hawling a bug with the front end smashed that was on it way to be crushed and payed the guy $50.00 for the top and cut it off right there on the spot. To top it the new roof has a sunroof...Bonus score... Last night however we welded in the oval rear window.

My wife and all my cars made it onto the news. Here is the link if your interested. The Baja is my wifes daily driver, the Jetta is mine and that hawkish looking thing is my project.

Well we finally got more work done on the growing number of VW in the driveway. Steve, our roomate who is helping us fix the cars. While we were on vacation to the Big D (Dallas, Tx) he started to take the fenders off of my wives Baja and started sanding and priming them for paint. We also cleaned out the garage again so we could move the volksrod project into the garage. Here are some pix...P.S. I also completed my workbench with the help of Steve. Asyou can see my helpers are also earning to use tools and we added the beam extender from Tinbeater and a narrowed front beam.

Angry Re: Call me Rattakus

So today I spent about four to five hours working on my wife's Baja. I got the new beam bolted on, bolted on the steering box, got the whole leave thing figured out and in, and three of the four arms. But for fucks sake, the top drivers side arm wont go in all the way. I need to get it over about a quarter of an inch but I don't have the strength to do it. Pissed me off since I could of had the whole front end put back together again today if not for that. :yell ing:: yelling::yelli ng:

OK Guys long time no talk. I have had a lot of changes in my life. we moved back to Portland (In Gresham now) February of2013. Unfortunately we lost both of our bugs with the move. The Baja was misplaced by the LAPD in ppound yard where they had no record of it till it sold at auction, and the Strassenschlepper was not able to make the space and cost quota. So that has been our bad news.

Now for some better news. I just retired from the U.S. Army after 25 years of service. And we bought a new bug. So now we have a 1970 bug that is probably gonna get a Cal Look to it.
