Not what you are looking for I know but sorta related... VW is looking to buy a motorcycle brand.

or how about a 1200cc TDI VW Lupo powered sportbike?

Years back (mid-eighties) a buddy had one of these. The chassis was a BMW and at the time an adapter was availabe to adapt the VW engine to the BMW tranny. I rode it a couple of times and it was fast and torqued to the right. Engine was a twelve hundred with dual carbs, no fan shroud. Sorry, no photos.
There was also a bike with a VW engine call the Amazonas, or something like that. I think it ran a VW transaxle and a sprocket off one of axle flanges (other side was 'fixed'). . Cycle World or one of the mainstream magazines ran an article.

Here are all the ones I've found.

This first one may be a rendering. I have no idea where I found it.

Real ones.

search "bike" in my gallery for lots of picts.

It all depends on how you attach the engine, there's more than a few ways to make it work. There's a Swedish company that sells them with 2 VW trannies, 1 gutted on the inside just as a spacer of sort

Flipping the ring gear isn't a crisis.

Von Dutch did one,but I think he used a BMW gearbox and shaft drive.

With an open diff, you would have to lock one side,
and put a sprocket on the other,or run two chains.

A Type 4 motor might be good, because the exhaust comes out the bottom.

I have a friend that is making one, wish I had more details, it has been a couple years since we talked about it.

Basically he is using the VW transaxle, but shortened and only using two gears, I think it is 3rd and 4th. He machined an adapter to mate a sprocket to the output, but also is using a planetary gear from a Ford auto trans to slow it down.

Since there is a big area above the engine, he is looking to make a supercharger fit, such as one of the Eaton blowers like used on new cars. More for looks than outright performance. No fan shroud, just air cooling like a typical motorcycle gets.

His frame is an old BSA modified of course. He is not going with chopper style, the shortened trans is needed to get it all fitting without a huge stretched wheelbase. Wire wheels of course with regular motorcycle tires, not the wide tire new chopper type.

It looks as though he used some sort of Strut. I'm guessing a strut welded to one of the the Down Tubes (for steering) and a single side bar for the Rear.

I don't Know!

Wonder what it would run with a Geers prostock engine in it?

The first 9 second VW, 40 horse powered.

and a different bike

Last one, not a VW but kinda close. It's a 1.6L small airplane/helicopter engine for reference.
