Default The Kommander!
Re:: Type-82e Replica.

Well as some of you old guys might remember I have had one -51 split laying around for awhile. Been collecting some parts etc. for it over the years. I also promised in one thread on Cutting Board that I would post some pix of it when I get something to show....

Here's the -51 body I bought in 2003.

A friend of mine who also is planning on building one just like the one I am had collected a couple of Barndoor transmissions and driveaxles and we have made deals that I make him some sheetmetal parts and he gives me other parts such as one crappy Barndoor transmission where the driveaxles and reductionboxes seemed OK.

I also bought a better floorpan for it last year.

Here's now some progress.

I started to open the reductionboxes back in last autumn but the one I started with didn't want to open then so I let it alone untill last month.

I then managed to finally open it and also open the other side as I need to remove the axle tubes if I want to take the driveaxle and ring and pinion from it and put into the split beetle transmission. The transmission cases in both are the split case type...

Today I took the 51 split craschbox and opened that to see if the Barndoor axle and ring and pinions would fit inside it...

After comparing them I noticed that I had to swap the ring gear, otherwise the parts are identical.

Here everything fitted to the leftside case.

And finally everything assembled and mounted on the -51 split floorpan...

The swap was a true Bolt-on as I was told by some Gurus years ago!!!

I have now compared Type-1 spindles with my barndoor spindles:

Linkpin c-c measurement:
Type-1 spindles, 132mm
BD spindles, 138mm

Beam tube c-c measurements so far:
Type-1, 120mm
Barndoor, appr. 139mm

Difference on linkpin distance is then 6mm and torsionbar pivotpoint distance is 29mm...

Strange geometry on the type-1.... Not parallell as stock either...?

The Barndoor seems to be parallell though..
