Default Project "YellowFunk" begins!
Re:: aka: Stinky

Got the car home yesterday and parked it. Today is the first official day of work on the car. I decide the that the look of the concaved, three out of four corners, wasn't for me. Got "Funky" up on jack stands and just had to take after it with the hammer and dolley. The rear driver's fender was the worst. It was the hardest hit and a repair sometime the past revealed about 1/4" of bondo. I hit the inside of the fender 3-4 times and 85 percent of the dent popped out smooth. The body dude didn't even try. He just gobbed the mud on and painted it. I also took the time to sand down the worst surface rust areas and put some primer on to slow that process down until I paint it... way, way off in the future. Not alot done, but it's a start.

I am not completely happy with the finish...one more skim coat of filler tomorrow.
Thanks for looking!

Settled on "YellowFunk". The PO had the car for 18 years. When they bought it from the first owner, hardcore hippie holdouts. They were very in touch with nature... so much so, they didn't believe in showering. The guy said it took about a year for the B.O. to finally go away. Therefore, I am the third owner of a Stinky Yellow Funk of a Bug.

Wow... I knew it had been a long time since I did anything to YellowFunk but dang! Last June?
For some reason I got fired up today... maybe the first full day of sunshine when I was off work. I pulled the stock beam and prepped my 2" turned beam for 2.5" drop spindles. I am past the age of driving down the road looking like I am having a siezure in my car as I convulse due to no suspension. I am hoping this combo gets me low but smooooooooooooooth as I roll this as a daily driver. Many thanks to those that got back to me about a hiccup in the install I had.... you know who you are. All is well and waiting on ball joints to get pressed and I will be putting this thing back together. In the mean time, I hope to reseal the motor and get my tires mounted on my stock chromies...
Nothing picture worthy today, but soon.

Edit: the 2" narrowed beam turned out to be junk. I got another beam and started over, building a 4" narrowed beam.

I just got confirmation of order shipped... once the new ball joints are here progress will continue. Going to to get tires mounted on the stock VW chromies today... 145/205s. Will reseal the motor on my next set of days off (I hope). The carpet/seats are all out with a new carpet kit, foam and covers in the garage. Hope to knock this stuff out in the next 2-3 weeks. Dang, kids and family gettin' in the way of progress! Wouldn't have it any other way but glad to be back on the project.

*thanks for thinking of me Fungus... I feel special.
Stay tuned...

We have had busy lives and this project was put on hold for years. Back at as the little guy in this photo is now a few months away from getting his driver's permit. This will be his car.

After sealing the floor.

After narrowing the beam 4" and installing adjusters I reassembled it with the help of PPE (volksrod member). Drop spindles of course...

The kid has always been my right hand man and is putting the brakes together:

First look with adjusters bottomed out... too low for the kid to drive... raised to rim height so it won't bottom out with if he gets a flat.

The boy and I got the motor in a while back. The same, previously mentioned, PPE came over and help sort out the wiring... 15 minutes later got to hear it run for the first time since I have owned the car.

With the motor in I could drop the back. Bryce and I did that a couple days ago.

Been so long since I had been around thought I would post a reminder... we all forget names but not cars.

Turns out the kid is quite a wrestler. Been very busy with the sports for the past couple years.
(Facing the camera)

We didn't do much for a while then as he got closer to 16 we got motivated. He is a licensed driver now. Got it back together and on the road. A little practice driving a stick and he's off!

The kid decided that he is going ratty on the exterior and cleaned up interior. Was all set up to paint it next month and he said... "I kinda like it the way it is..." almost brought a tear to my eye I was so proud. With that we have redone the interior and have a carpet kit to install. Waiting until we get the stereo system in for the carpet. Built the box today. Spent 30 minutes cutting a piece off cardboard to get the rear radius. It will contain the sub centered and a round speaker on each side.

I hope to cover it in the same as the back seat so it flows. Anyone got a back rest seat cover for the rear they will sell me?
