Devil's Plaything...........
Re:: I finally got a damn Volksrod
I know everybody gets their cars for free but I finally got my Volksrod today
It's a 1970 with an ok body....... good heater channels.... it has some holes in the pan from the sunroof that leaked while it was sitting....... no motor or trans but I got some Kool yellow and white tuck and roll seats. The guy I bought it from said he would get me the matching rear seat too. It has current non op registration and my buddy that went from VW's to harley's gave me 2 irs transmissions for free
oh yeah...... I paid $200 for the car and that included delivery.
I'll finally quit whining about not having a Volksrod...........
but I'll still whine about other crap......
This gives me an incentive to put the turbo on my '67 Baja, then the 8" wider front end, so I can start working on the new car. I know it's not a Volksrod yet but I will attempt to transform it.
The name "Devil's Plaything" is the title of a Danzig song I like.
I know I could have posted this in my intro but if I did that how could everybody make smart ass comments

Re: Devil's Plaything...........
I have a fresh rebuilt engine in my son's garage that will be going in my Baja after I tune the turbo on the tired motor. I'm going to use my old Baja motor for the new car. As for looks.........
I was thinking fenderless with a beam extension......
but other than the left rear fender they don't look too bad.....
My current train of thought is to loose the bumpers.......
get a better left rear fender.......... (anybody in So. Cal. got a cheap one?)
Then drop the front end with some adjusters and maybe narrow it a little at the same...........
As for the rear I'm thinking cut out the apron and loose the deck lid......... I have a cheap exhaust thats 4 seperate megaphones so they won't clear the lid. I have some kool aluminum valve covers with some tall tubes welded to them and some cone shaped breathers. I already built a tall shifter for it with a brake lever for the reverse lockout. I can't decide if I want to run the aluminum seats from my Baja or use the yellow seats that came with it. As for the front wheels there is a stock steel 4 lug wheel I like but I need to figure out the year. I have the wheels that were on the front of my Baja that I am going to put on the rear with some adapters.

Re: Devil's Plaything...........
I can do all the drinking and I want for a while Hal....... no motor or trans in it yet......... Just gonna make some Vroom..... Vroom noises..........
At work today I was looking at my computer wall paper, the Joe Dirt rendering........
that car is sweet...... If I could land a decent deal on a grill shell I would be tempted to pull off 3 perfectly good fenders and off a perfectly good front and rear apron to do a non "chopped top" version of it.......

Re: Devil's Plaything...........
Kind of a bump here...... I haven't started on the car yet but I have got a few items for it.......
First pick is my grill shell............ got it striped local for $100
Paid $50 for the grill shell from a VR member and made the insert from a piece of scrap aluminum.
The second pic here....... I built a VR shifter from a Empi unit that I swear looks just like a Scat Drag Fast shifter. The lever is from a bicycle that is now my reverse lever. The steering wheel was given to me by a friend..... just a refinish with 12 coats of clear on the wood

Re: Devil's Plaything...........
Those stripes are insane. I dig.
Save up some cash so you can start hitting the swap meet again.
Good luck with the project Joel!

Re: Devil's Plaything...........
I changed my mind and decided to do a full on restoration. Maybe I should be posting this on the Samba but what the hell. I need to replace the front apron as it had a small dent in it. I did some cutting but I'm not sure if I removed enough of the front apron to do a proper job of replacing it. Let me know if I should cut some more.
Hey I'm only kidding....... the is just way too much fun........

Re: Devil's Plaything...........
Right on, looks cool
The massive hack job on the front, plus the fake grill might work really well with the extender + flipped beam look that's been posted lately.

Re: Devil's Plaything...........
Ok I got a little more done........... First up are pic's of the 10" beam extension.......
Next pic is the mount I made for my gas tank........
The next pic's are of my fuel tank sitting on the mount..... I need to get some 1" flat stock and make a strap to hold down the tank.........
I have a lot of rake on the fuel tank for 2 reasons...... the fuel pick up is at the rear of the tank..... also I plan to drop the front at least 2" more. The beam extension gave me 2" of drop but I want this thing to have some mad rake to it. I'll be looking for some drop spindles for drum brakes and some taller rear tires. If that doesn't get me enough drop then I will throw some adjusters on the beam.........
The next thing to be done is get my grill shell mounted...... I will have it on soon but I have to go buy some gas for my mig welder....................

Everybody says that size doesn't matter but I'm not going to get rid of 2" for anybody
Seriously the 10" is perfect as it puts the front of my tank even with the beam. An 8" would give me overhang on the beam. I think it will be looking better when I get the grill shell on

Re: Devil's Plaything...........
I got a little more accomplished....... I made the mounts for my grill shell and a hold down strap for my fuel tank. I must have been bored because I drilled holes in the strap......... What the hell was I thinking...... took way too long to drill the holes......
all 43 of em'
After the holidays I will start on my front bumper / faux frame rails. I think it will make the front end look a little more complete. After I get some drop spindles and head lights mounted the front end will be complete as far as Volksrodding it is concerned. It will still need brakes and the steering shaft extended. I'll start on the back of it soon. After the back is cut and the front gets a little lower I'll roll it out of my garage for some better pic's.

yes cut that part off and weld the end back on the shaft. that part is almost the 7.5" you need to cut off.

Have you considered using an I-Beam frontend, like the Socalook kit?
Your car looks totally rad, I'm just thinking that style would look better on yours than the VW beam+extension
