Re: New nonVW Project
VERY COOL!
I saw on tv a few weeks ago (travel trailer/motorhome expo show) they had a Scotty, and they are doing them up retro style or 50's style. All checkerboard inside and the same color as yours outside!
They look sweet!
Good luck doing yours and post pics !

Re: New nonVW Project
Yea they started making them again. New campers but old style design. We thought about one of those but, it like buying a new beetle but really wanting an old beetle! Plus the price of the new Scotty are like 15,000 for the smallest ones!

Re: New nonVW Project
My dad had one given to him and he fixed up and used it for about 15 years. About 3 years ago he gave it away to a friend.

Re: New nonVW Project
Heres a little update.
Well I had no time over winter to even look at the camper. We took it up to Austin's (Scotty Restorer, who is helping me) last fall (late). It sat outside beside his garage just waiting for me. Well we finally made time for it this past weekend (April 4, 09). I'm am early riser and so it Austin. We pushed her into the garage around 7:30am. We have already talked about what is planned for the future so we were both on the same page. It was planned to keep digging til we hide SOLID material! then start building from there.
8:30am
4:30pm
Next day ready to be towed home!
Whats a tow home with out a story?
Going down I-80 doing around 65-70 mph. People passing me looking at me funny (normal ), but we felt a SOLID bump. I look back and the trailer is still there and nothing out of the norm. I decided to pull over (she told me to pull over ). It was a GOOD thing I did. the fucking trailer jack some how unscrewed and was the whole way down (I know it was up) . Sparks must have been flying pretty good. BUT NO ONE BEEPED OR MOTIONED! . I "tried" to crank it back up but no go! I got my tools out and snapped all 3 bolts and through it in the back.
I started a build thread for it. It is going all retro! I found all new ext. lights for it.

Re: New nonVW Project
I have always wanted one of those, I almost picked up a GMC RV instead last year and realized that I really just wanted a little scotty.
I'm going to keep an eye on the build thread.

Re: New nonVW Project
It's just under, if not at 1000 pounds. It's alittle bigger than a Scotty Serro about 6"-8" wider & longer, plus about 10" taller. The tongue weight is under 150 pounds. It tows like a dream too. We have a Suburban, Subaru Outback (H3.0). I'm trying to get her to let me put a hitch on her Coronet 500 (bolted, not welded & only put on the hitch when we are going to tow it), but she won't let me touch it!
I might have found a guy to sandblast it faster & cheaper than I can do it. I have to call him today.
Dan, we thought about a Burro or even a Scamp. The fiberglass campers are cool as hell too. They usualy have less water damage too. They are a 2 piece shell with a seam lengthwise.

just looked at the update... damn that thing is going to rock when it is back together.... after looking at the pics....i would have been scared to go inside the damn thing before.
on the trailer brake... do it work with the shifting of weight when you hit the brakes on the tow vehicle?
keep up the killer work

Re: New nonVW Project
The trailier brakes; They work when the you apply the brakes in the truck the weight of the trailer pushes the frame into the tongue (brake acturator). The tongue is 2 pieces, the hitch ( the one on the ground) slides (1.5") into the tongue frame. This action pushes a plunger into the master cylinder applying the brakes to the trailer. The shock only dampens the movement from the trail into the truck.
I found new brake assemblies today. Heres a question. The new brake assembly cost $57 which is everything from the back plate, cylinder, spring kit, brake pads all assembled already. JUST new brake pads cost $53!!!!! Who prices this stuff?
Once I have the frame finished it isn't going to take long at all. All the alum. (trim, windows, door frame) is (can be) polished to a mirror finish. I'm stopping at Eatwoods tent at Carlisle and picking up some buffing compound. Stoped by the body shop and they are willing to work with me and get the org. paint matched. Tomorrow is another sandblasting day!

Re: New nonVW Project
Trailer parts are the screwiest thing. Try finding trailer tires. They are like 2x the cost of a tire already mounted on a new rim, if you can even find just the tires. I need new tires for my boat trailer and it's gonna cost me over $400.

Re: New nonVW Project
Hey John. This is the cheapest for trailer stuff.
http://www.lowcosttrailersupplies.com/
Check rednecktrail.com too
For RV (camper) stuff, this one is the cheapest. Plus the warehouse is an hour north of me and its at my door next day!

Re: New nonVW Project
Thanks for the links, I'll check their prices. I generally go to Eastern Marine in Newark, DE. I have built a trailer from scratch with what they keep in stock. It's only about 20 minutes from home. I save the cost of shipping and the 6% sales tax ( Marlyland and the increase on our sales tax. I haven't bought anything substantial in Maryland since they raised our sales taxes nor will I.)
I've got 4 7.5 x 15 heavy duty tires I have to replace. I'd just run LT tires but my boat is almost 10K lbs, so I really don't want to chance it with tires. What's crazy is I can generally buy pre mounted tires on new rims for less than I can have new tires mounted and balanced on my rims.
I'm diggin the trailer project. I really want a little teardrop myself. The first family vacation I really remember was with my parents, dragging my grandmother's Scotty to Florida when I was like 4. I still rememeber my parents bickering the whole way home after my dad picked up a hitch hiker. The dude smelled so bad we only gave him a ride for a half hour and changed where where we were going jsut to get him out of the car.
So you Gonna have the trailer finished for you and the mrs in time for MM2.0???

Re: New nonVW Project
It WILL be done for MM2.5!
John look at the RVdirect link too. They do have tires there too. The only thing that pissed my off was; that I ordered tire for the camper from http://www.lowcosttrailersupplies.com/ and they shipped from Redneck trailer. WHICH is less than 5 miles from my house. It was still cheaper than paying tax. Go figure!!

Yeah, come to think of it, I think I ordered the hitch for my W8 from Lowcosttrailersupplies.com and they drop shipped it from someone else. I got the package from some other company and looked it up and it was like $40 more from the people that shipped it.

Re: New nonVW Project
The brake assembly looks like my buddies '66 Nova brake (besides the uno-wheel cylinder). The brake drum weights about 30# each.

Northern tool has a lot of parts. I've seen trailer wheels and such at Menard's.
