So I am a GM freak, love old Impalas and pre 54 bombs. Working on my 3rd Impala project, and the girlfriend says she always wanted a Bug.... and I always wanted to do one up, so it worked out well.
Unfortunately the Bug needed as much work as the Impala, but damn its MUCH easier to do aircooled Dubs since theyre lighter, smaller, and cheaper. I dont know why the hell I havent done one up by now?!?!!?!
I wont cloud this thread with pics YET, till new ones are taken and then I'll post them. I'm all up for comments, questions, rants, general bullshitting and the like. Probably will do up a Volksrod VERY soon , pending the garage addition and/or cashflow allows. Meanwhile here's my rusted machines getting a new lease on life.... the hooptie is in rebuild mode, and the topless fat chick is in " damage assessment" and getting ready for pan work before body. Typically i'm so ADHD and scattered I bounce from one thing to another so i'm not bored; i'm actually taking the dub from the pan up, getting the roller all done before focusing on the body.
62 Impala buildup... Lowrod, street lowrider or maybe Gasser....
progress progress progress.... slowly. awaiting some Master Series silver for the cabrio and my impala. frame head about to be replaced, making a jig to keep it all lined up. stripped down for poly bushings and MS but havent sourced the tools for the IRS arms yet. scavenging parts deals online and off in the meantime, getting ideas for my own VR build as well... forgot i didnt do pics here but only on LIL. OOps. here's my quik-fab engine stand doing some good with the "spare" motor the PO said ran good. WTF-ever.
loose cylinders/head/pushrod tubes done this one in. car is stripped down more and more, thinking about selling the rust free body parts (hood/trunk/fenders) to run 60s variety and add T bars.... she wants to switch to wide 5s as well. car will be MS silver with kustom shop flatz purple body and some airbrushing here and there. creme top/guts.

so things are starting to come together. trans is almost ready to drop in, and the beam is ready for puck removal and avis adjusters to go on. master series the pan a couple more times and put floors in. going with a corvair flat 6 modified nicely and who knows what else.....

i coated the car in masterseries to keep it from rusting, and to see the panels better to do work on them. here's the horrid work the PO actually PAYED some bastard to cobble up on this poor car.

here's my answer to the $24.99 ground strap that MAMW wants. free stuff from the garage collecting dust. 4 pcs of 8 gauge wire with copper ends crimped with a hammer. THIS is a ground strap!
yeah, i know.. its purple. check out the poly bushings, the whole car is getting the prothane treatment.
here's a few pics mocking up the engine making sure the new 12v starter works with it and measuring out for headers from either a buggy setup or custom corvair applications. VW's have more room apparently since the transmission and suspension isnt in the way like on a corvair. engine is still dirty but not as bad as 5 layers of paint over top made it look!

so aparently due to title laws and bullshit DMV statutes, i just bought me one hell of a parts car. looks like the vert is gonna be laying pan soon, and all the rust and body issues will be well taken care of from the solid donor hardtop parts body.
pics soon. i wanna make this project go FAST....

inverted the back pans so they dont go below the tunnel , will let the car lay out better. as if it didnt lay on the outers before, this way nothing can get caught from pavement pounding at speed.

got the air ride back together, fused, relayed, temporary setup till its all redone with electric valves and better compressor/tank. got fittings (thanks to Cliff!!)coming to go right from the airshock to 3/8" compression fittings.
fitted the empi early hood with gauge pods from Bugroadster, seats too, gonna put the air ride pressure gauges in the hood. here's a few pix. if anyone has an early front apron cut at the gas tank i need it!!

shot some color to the dash to see if i liked it. House of Krylon satin Jade. gonna do a phosphor and como green interior. should be right between those colors. not typical rod color but not sambanista correct either! baller on a budget build!
exhaust hits before suspension bottoms out, gonna do something that will clear cause the apron touches when front is up and rear is down all the way. got a fiberglass apron smooth with no cutouts to use and hide some kinda exhaust setup maybe exiting to either side.
ALSO.... empi fiberglass hood, early, shows a BIG arc difference. is my apron THAT hit or is it an early/late difference?!?!?!

got the body scuffed and smooth, few small spots left to attend to with some glaze, got it in silver MS to seal it up and help my blind ass find the spots i missed before it...
hope to get some 600 wet/dry and block it down and hit it with some House of Krylon

so the 1:1 has suffered from my air compressor (sorry excuse for one at that) took a nose dive and destroyed some fasteners i cant replace, i went back to 1:10 scale competition, and yes, using bugs there too!!

OMG its been months since i have shamelessly whored N trolled this site. still got the bugs, the addiction, just wishing it wasn't so damned cold still!

Now i can say its too damned HOT! 81 degrees at 9:30, least the garage is climate controlled. finally talked Anita into making the cabriolet a.....a......
VOLKSROD!!!!
even tho its still gonna be purple, we're cuttin' the hell out of it and goin' fenderless, hope to get a beam extension one day , still wanna bag it.
Corvair motor is needing a ring set and it can go back together. still without an air compressor but that will change soon, one way or another.

wow.holy threadbump Batman! been working hard over the weekends in the garage again. impala is on hold till I can get this bug taking up ONE space again. hacked up a nice sedan body I got from OldSkoolJay and putting the solid vert only parts on top the solid body. neither sides are going together quite the same.
the left is using the sedan b pillar, the right is using all the vert pillar. this is SO MUCH FUN I can't find a container big enough to hold all the FUN in it. NOT.

so this needs a serious update. Been working on 3 projects at once then hit a money wall and work on something else. third project coming together FAST since I am combining mechanicals from 85 crown vic and old school koolness of a 48 Ford F3 1 ton. subframed and laying lower (fits in the garage now!) and will be sporting my previously retired 22's since nothing else around here had the bolt pattern for them. i'll keep it short. one pic beginning mid april, one pic from yesterday.
