Default Scored a VW Supercharger!

I am the young guy (40) in a group of local hotrodder in my town. One of my good buddie in the group (and best friend of my father-in-law while growing up) called me the other night and said he was thinking of my car and had something that would be just right for the car. He wanted to know if I could swing by his shop on Wed. morning. I got to his shop today and he pulls out an old dusty large metal can. He pops the lid, puts his hand in the can, and pulls out this little supercharger. He said he bought it 35 years ago to run on his 4 cyl hotrod he had built back then. I ran it on the car but pulled it when he sold the car. It has been in the metal can since. The rest of the contents in the can were double the pulleys needed to run it on a VW motor. He said when he bought it it was a VW Supercharger kit. He owns a machine shop and built his own pulleys and adapter for what ever he ran it on back then.
Here's the best part... he said I could have it... like FREE!

I don't know anything about superchargers so I will be doing some research (carb size, ignition, etc). I want to run this strictly as a streetable/daily driver car. No race stuff in my future. My motor now is a stock 1600 with rebuilt top end with about 500 miles on it. Any guidance, info, or advice would be much appreciated.

Here it is:

Well, you will definitely need the intake for it. Dick Landy made one that I usually see with that style of blower. However since those aren't readily available you might have to find something suitable and adapt it. The Dick Landy one works similar to a stock single carb intake but has a much larger base plate in the middle to accept the supercharger.

Here is an image taken from Samba:

Very nice score! If I find any other info I'll surely post it up for ya.

Dick Landy's site lists 3 types:
1300 - 2275 VW Type 1 w/75 blower, 6 rib drive polished, w/Dog House retained
1835 - 3000 VW Type 1 w/144 blower, 10 rib drive comp only w/o Dog House
2180 3535 VW Type 1 w/174 blower, 10 rib drive, Pro comp., Only gas or alcohol

Dude, I'm feeling green... with envy!!! That's totally rad man. Looks to be in good shape too! Amazing score.

On a side note, could he just make an adapter to his existing manifold?

Guys on the samba sent me this pepco link and encourage me to sell it to finance my next project... guess it is a hot item???

They also said it would be better for the a 1200cc motor... is there any benefit to installing on my motor. I mean, dang... I have such a cool item, it was free, and I want to use it. Even if it just looks cool and whines on the motor.
Thanks for the feedback gang.

I think the problem with using it on larger motors is it wont flow enough, and trying to make it flow enough will burn it up, I looked into it for a little while, it is more a vintage speed item worth more as a "Holy crap that is cool" item than a high performance speed part for a big motor if you will.

Well if it won't work on your larger engine, buy a smaller engine and use it. I've never liked parting with things that people/friends hook me up with. The guy was cool to give it to you, I'd try to use it. But if it's worth a lot and you need the cash for something else, maybe might be good to sell and get some stuff you need. I'd keep it myself and try to use it though. The coolness factor just outweighs anything else...LOL!

Superchargers can be quite tedious to put in, so I think you should take the easy way out and give it to me... (I swear I'll put it to good use)

Pick up a a 36hp/1200cc motor or build one and run the blower on it. You can pick one up for for $300 or more that runs. Put on the blower and try to plow the fucker up!

"Plow" is to explode only it's worth ten times the original effect! In comparison; you can blow-up a propane tank or stick of dynamite, but a nuclear bomb "Plows-up"!!!

...that's a little explanation for all you kiddies who aren't hip to the new-wave jive.

I'm with the other guys on this one. Save up your pennies and buy a 36hp to put it on. Rebuild the engine and even spend the $$'s to have it balanced. Do the research and build it right and that could be a pretty bad ass little engine. Well, as bad ass as a 36hp can be that is.

If you decide you aren't going to use it or display it, I'd offer it back to the guy who gave it to you.
