Re: teach me to airbrush !
Cool - thanks. My compressor is probabaly the same vintage as the airbrush. It is one of those craftsman with wheel on the back.
Should i ask Santa for a new dual action air brush and compresser kit? I can also check craigslist.

Re: teach me to airbrush !
Harbor freight has their dual action kit on sale right now for $80, comes with comp, filter, hose, and their dual action ab. I have this same brush, and even though I'm still learning how to use it, I pick it up before my dual action Blue Point. Don't know why, but I like the $15 HF one that is 1/6th the cost of the BP, maybe cause it's lighter.

Thanks - there is a Harbor Frieght 5 minutes from my office. I will check it out next week. I need to learn how to paint my daughters ice hockey goalie helmet.

Re: teach me to airbrush !
Get some India Ink, and a stack of cheap paper.
The ink cleans up real easy, and doesn't clog the airbrush.
Use it straight out of the bottle, undiluted.
Cheap and easy to find.
Practice doing lines, and daggers, fades, all the usual boring stuff.
Develop control, then worry about color and design.

Re: teach me to airbrush !
I would think with an ink, if you can stand it that cold and really want to practice , then go for it~ lol!
Enamels are sensitive and require different thinners for the temps. I don't think it has much effect on inks though.
Your compressor may not like working in really cold. I have seen my old one get ice on the lines.

Re: teach me to airbrush !
Am I reading this wrong?... Is he trying to spray primer with an air brush?
I would think thats not such a good idea.. as compared with the paints suggested..

Re: teach me to airbrush !
Primer in a can is cheap.
But - let me ask the question. Can you spray primer thriough an AB? I am working on small areas trying to get the body smoothed out. Fixing little dents. I just thought that I would get me using it.... just to get a feel and learn. So - could run primer through it?
If you tell me that is dumb then i won't even attempt it.

Re: teach me to airbrush !
Yes, you can spray almost anything, with the right size nozzle.
The cheap rattle can primer is mostly solvent.
Check the label on the can for minimum temps.

Re: teach me to airbrush !
For spraying primer get one of the cheap gravity feed touch up guns from Harbor Freight, Home Depot or Lowes. Using a small airbrush and filling the little cup gets tedious after a while. I've been airbrushing for fun and profit for a while and I use an Iwata and can recommend them if you can afford one. Dixieart.com has a big selection of airbrushes. Go to the airbrush forum at wetcanvas.com, there's lots of tutorials under "projects, articles and WIPS".

Thanks ya'll. I get the piont about primer.
I guess i will start with the ol' Sears AB and see where it leads me for now. I will ask Santa for a book and some time on the net to watch basic technics. Then....off to the garage to just start.
Thank you to all for siggestions, links and insperation. Hopefully I can post some work in the near future along with 73KGB!

they always told me not to use india ink since it does clog but to use regular ink??
been airbrushing for a week now using some old createx paint but need to dilute it first since it has been standing there some time (4 years or so)
in my search for new createx paint i found a store where they teach classes so i signed up and start my 30hours course in the beginning of februari
after i can walk i can take courses in trueflames, pinstriping...
but i guess i'll take the basics first and then see what happens..

Re: teach me to airbrush !
Don't know if it was mentioned before- Airbrush Action is a great magazine.
Many how to's and great sources or resources.
I started painting back in the 70's. There is so much more stuff to work with now- many great paints- all I used to have was laquer.
Just use the correct thinners and such for EACH kind of paint. If you are using Createx or Auto Air, use their thinner (forget what it's called) but not water.
But definatley pick up an AirBrush Action magazine.

Re: teach me to airbrush !
Airbrush Action = more ads than articles.
Sorry, had subscriptions twice in the past 15yrs, yes the articles were great, but they were few. These days you'll find more howtos by surfing the many ab sites online. Not much for newbies to build with, IMO.
But I'll admit, everytime I go thru a barnes n noble, I can't pass one up, but thats once a year maybe.
Just my .02.

Re: teach me to airbrush !
Yea, sadly- it does seem to be an ad for some (or a lot!) of their own product.
But in all the years past there has been some great info in there.

Re: teach me to airbrush !
Never had India ink clog--had old createx paint clog, after so many months you have to strain it. Never with India ink.
get stuff on paper.
if you still want to spray primer the paasche H works and it comes with 3 needles and spray nozzles (use to anyway) and it is a low cost single action that will last forever.

Re: teach me to airbrush !
I haven't been on here an posted in a while. Pinstriping is fun even though I only did it once but I liked it. I have a AB gun to that my dad has had for 7 years, brand new in the box. I have been drawing though off an on.
I gotta ask though, what are daggers and dots?

watch the you tubes. Pauly said it's short lessons, I can't view you tube, dial up~ zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz lol
Basically, dots N daggers are the first exercises you need to learn to control the brush. Making dots, with out blowing them all over the place, looks like spiders lol! and then moving the dot into a stroke, or dagger. Learning to pull the trigger and getting consistent air and paint mixture.
:)

Re: teach me to airbrush !

nah, you didn't know~
Get yourself any beginners book, and it'll tell you , right after proper care and cleaning of your ab, and supplies, and and, lol!
I'll admit, I never mastered either of them til I got a different gun. I think it was due to my impatience, I can now.
Got a library at your college? bet there's at least 1 book in the craft section~

Re: teach me to airbrush !
actually when I posted the pics of my first attempt to pinstripe I was recomended a few books and I got 2. And i looked at them an played around drawing them on paper and stuff but not on any metal stuff.Remember Im the one that used a 50 cent brush an model car paint on VW Trike. And found out NEVER to use a water marker to draw a drawing out then go over it with the paint.Because once it dries an you get water on it later on, the marker eventually comes out.
The book i got shows what tools you need an hoow to do flames on cars and other random things.
