Default harbor freight tubing bender (yes tubing not pipe)
Re:: woo hoo they finally have an affordable one

don't know if you guys have seen this yet or not. It's been in the last couple of catalogs i've gotten from them for $159 but on teh site it's $179 either way i plan on getting one eventually. I've got a project i'm going to need to make roll bars for and what it would cost me to have them made i can buy the tool, and tubing for less $$ and have a VERY useful tool
http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=99736

btw the stand is sold separate

That one looks ok at best. Looks like it would be a royal pain in the ass to use. I know I would have a hard time getting two bends to look alike with that thing. To build an effective roll cage I would MUCH rather use something more like this:

Now, you don't need one this fancy, but it certainly will do the trick. A bender like the one pictured will give you a lot more precise bends with tighter radiuses since the dies give you the same bend every single time. Usually use inch and a half .120" wall DOM tubing for roll cages. Dunno if the harbor freight one could handle that.

My two cents, anyway.

HF has a Hossfield knock off, similar to the one Kickmania posted.
Much better for tighter 90 degree bends.

jd square make an amazing bender. if i were you i would save some money up and pick one of those up. i dont own the bender you put a pic of up but to me it looks like there is no way in hell that thing will bend a thick wall DOM tube. and its not going to do nice bends either, looks only like it does gradual ones.

a JD squared one with a 1.5" die should be in the ballpark of $600. WELLLL worth the money.

That sure looks like a pipe (not tubing) bender . . . .

On the other hand, this shows it can be done:

I've found free plans online, for a Hossfield/JD2 style bender.
Not that complex.

The Harbor Freight Tubing roller posted at the start of this thread is a Roller, made for rolling circles and arches. Not for making bends. Just for gradual curves in tubing. it's very easy to use for that and works fine for that purpose. The jeep sight that sells other dies for it charges more for the dies then you can buy the roller for. that being said you can't find a cheaper roller anywhere and it is a very well built tool. Probably the best thing HF has ever produce. If you watch carefefully you can find them on sale at times for $140 or so and with a 20% off coupon you can get it for $110 plus tax. It will not work the great for a Roll Cage bender.

The Harbour Freight Pipe bender is for bending pipe and the dies are sized accordingly, pipe is measured in ID and Tubing is OD. You can however modify the tool to work with tubing by grinding out the dies to fit your tubing then either making a clamp over the top of the die to to clamp the tubing in place to avoid it folding, and or making shoes over the outside rollers to avoid the kinking. Both methods have documented success on the Web, theres a great thread on this on the Samba as well as one on here somewhere with links to the samba as well as other sights.
The sand thing works but plenty of people have done great stuff with out it. I personally like the shoe idea where you have a split length of tube that acts as a guide to help pull the tubing over the die as it goes up. Theres even a trick to making 180 degree bends with it. it involves doing the 2 out side bends first and then filling in whats left in the center. You will need to figure out your center of the radius for the tubing your doing and once you got that done the math and layout should come easy.
I have heard that it's hard to get a 90 degree bend out of it but I imagine you could do 2 45's and make it work. The nice thing is it's easy to reload this bender and it also made to work horizontally too. Just make a couple wood block to support the height of your tubing in the die and on its ends.

I have both of these tools. The Pipe bender is still being modded, I have used it for bending 1" solid rod and a single bend in scrap tubing and It does need some work but I am pleased with it. A few extra mods you can beat it for under $60.

Read these threads

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/vie...ht=bender+cage

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/vie...ht=bender+cage

Heres one more thread from this site where alot of this is discussed as well as a square tubing die which I plan on making eventually
http://www.volksrods.com/forum/showt...arbour+freight

Heres a pic of the clamp thing I was talking about.

These 2 pictures show what happens with out the clamp.

Heres the shoe thing

Heres what I meant about horizontal

I am also gonna make some square tubing dies for mine eventually.

As a groud of DIY'ers here and basically untradional tyes it seems like most people on VR would be totally into this but some people treat this as Blasphemy, why I am not sure. I love the idea of getting results form simple and inexpensive tools with just a little mods here and there.

Anyway if you do alot of searches on the web you can find alot more.

I wasn't knockin anybodys ingenuity or creativity here, but I personally think it would prevent a lot of headache to save up for the right tool for the job. Sure, it costs more, but you get what you pay for IMO. With a tubing (NOT a pipe) bender you'll be able to make bend after bend without having to deal with sand, grinding out dies, or fabbing pieces for your tools. Just saying that I'd rather spend time making stuff for my cars then my tools.

yeah but we are also talking about a differance of less than $100 with some mods or over $500 with out. While i understand your point and i agree completly if i was building things for a living but as a hobby i'm gonna keep it on teh cheap side.

They are $149 in the catalog I got over the weekend. I've been looking at them since it first showed up in their ads, but our local store has never had one in stock for me to look at.

I want it for exactly what it's intended for, making those long radius bends. I want to do a cage like the manxter with the sweeping cage. Actually I was going to buy one this weekend to form supports for my winter boat cover, but all hell broke loose. See my whine on the this day sux thread! My wife also wants a greenhouse, so that's also perfect for a nice 12' wide greenhouse made of 1" EMT.

My dad always preached to me as a kid, use the right tool for the right job. Disposeable tools from places like HF have their place.

Use this coupon,
I have seen them in a few different magazine, and it would be worth it to buy the magazine to save this money on a big purchase.

Hell print it and bring it in and say you didn't wanna cut up your magazine. they will do it anyway, I borught fake ones in once and the honoured it. I didn't know at the time but it worked.
