Default lunatic magnet's project thread...

my name is pEtE

i started messin with a baja about 3 years ago... i now have too many projects and will never get them all done. its a good thing i'm young.

this is project car 1. i call it the mad beetle. its the closest to a volksrod i'll get. the biggest thing about it is a turbo type 4 engine that i'm building for it. the front will be dropped, wide glass fenders in the rear... whatever else i can think of.

i have pictures of the other 3 cars on my website. click link below...

updates:
i havent done jack squat this year. well thats not entirely true.

cars:
the 74 super is still waiting to be finished. the motor is in it but has not run yet
i bought a race car
i sold my 74 baja to a kid in new jersey.
i bought vwfanatic's 63 ragtop baja as a project
i bought a 92 f-150 to tow the race car.

where the time went:
my gf bought a trans am and the motor blew. swapping that engine, a transmission, and a rear axle in that car cost me the summer months.

i bought a circle track stock car. i'll be racing that this spring. that took up most of my time in the late summer months.

moving cost me the fall. all my stuff was boxed up in the garage so i had no work space.

where next year leads:
have to swap engine and rear end in my camaro. shouldnt take too long as soon as i can get settled into my new garage.

need to prep the race car for this season (shouldnt take too long, just have to put a tranny in it)

anything else wiull just be when i feel like working on it!

current car pictures and status:::

1) 71 super, kind of for sale if someone is interested. kinda lost interest in this one.

2) 74 super hardtop. waiting for gf to do the interior, since its her car. i refused to do any more work on it until she does some work.

3) 59 invader kit car, i really want to get to this because i think it could be a lot of fun, but ive been too busy. hopefully once i get a few more things done (engine swap in my camaro, cut up a cutlass parts car) i can get to it.

4)65 hardtop... picked this up to be a winter beater but it needed more work than was anticipated. i had it running, hope to have it running again later this week. need to get to DMV and get plates. it looks rough. it IS rough. it has charm.

5) 63 ragtop baja. newest addition to the fleet, got this one from dan (vwfanatic). this is the best condition ive ever gotten a vw in. might be worth sandblasting and doing something nice with, but i love baja's too. i guess we'll have to see.

just because i havent posted anything here in awhile...

everything has been on hold while i try my hand at stock car racing. i keep ending up with more to do and more stuff to work on before i can get back to playing with toys.

right now on the agenda...
1) get race car ready to go for start of the season
2) paint my k2500 blitz black
3) pull the motor from my camaro and fix a bad rear main seal leak
.
.
.
.
then i can go back to playing with vw's. and this doesnt include the time/effort/money wasted when i tear the race car up.

beaterbug is currently at vwfanatic's house being stored... soon to be at busguy71's house because its being sold to him... the motor that is in it (a stock 1600 DP) might get thrown into the 63 baja so i can drive it this summer.

i am considering taking the frame from the 71 vert, putting a STD frame head on it, building/jacking it up, and using that under the baja. unless i dig up an IRS pan between now and then?

i think the vert body is too far gone to waste time fooling with... and its taking up space in mom's yard... sucks that i dumped a decent amount of cash into it.

havent had any luck selling the 74... had it on ebay for $350 and no bidders, though someone emailed me and offered me $250. the paint cost me more than that, let alone all the shete metal (floors, rockers, etc).

i wish it would sell so i can go pick up TC's v8 bug...

so ive been driving the panel around for the past week or so... trying to decide what to change and what not to change...

so far i have planned:
brake upgrade (safety)
overdrive transmission
line lock (smoke em up!!!!)
roll bar (safety)

the line lock will go in as soon as i get it, the rest will probably wait till winter... TC is going to graft in some early headlight buckets for me, and some matching flared fenders for the rear...

i'm still debating what to do with the panel truck back. it is growing on me, but i still have this desire to put a stock rear clip back on the car and a ragtop... i really cant make up my mind.

killed the trans in the v8 bug last weekend trying to do a burnout... i have an overdrive transmission to go in, but i dont know if it can take the abuse of the new engine i got... i suppose as long as i go easy on it...

i'll probably just toot around to a few shows, the transmission is slipping pretty bad but i can still get around. when winter comes... lookout!

well i had sprayed it once about a month ago, but i wasnt happy with the flames i did.
SO.... i sanded and sprayed again, i skipped the flames and went with a solid color. i finished around 11:30 last night, so i havent seen it in daylight yet. i think the end result will be a nice 15ft paintjob...

i finally got the v8 bug running well again after swapping a blower into it... there was something wrong in the distributor...

took a spin down to the local autozone to see one of my buddies, made a little tire smoke, and drove home.
about a half mile from home the transmission starts to slip... i drove the car a total of about 2 miles before i blew the trans up again... DOH!

welp... after not a lot of thinking, i sold the v8 bug. it spent more time broken than running under my ownership, and i just have too many other projects that need working on other than a car that wont stay running. SO, i pulled the blown 350 out of it and sold it to a fella off craigslist who is a huge paneltruck fan. good luck to him.
meantime i am back to working on the baja... picked up a beat pair of doors from vwfanatic earlier this week so i could steal the regulators for use in my 1pc window kit. hopefully i'll have those installed by the end of the weekend (what a pain in the ass...), and next week i'll start working on the roll bar. i'd love a full cage but i think it will just take up too much space in the car. so i'm going to go with a single hoop...
