Default 1973 Super Beetle suicidal chop top

Located in Rochester, Michigan, just outside of Detroit, as my login name says. This is real easy eh ??

I bought this car when I was 14 in Florida, 1st. 1/2 ass custom @ 16, stored for last 17 years or so. Do the math how old that mikght make me.

I completely dismantled it, had it media blasted, and delivered it to an awesome VW Body Shop. It will receive a 4" chop, shaved suicide doors, 55 oval and dash graft, OG rag, and full air ride suspension, turbo powerplant.

Why a Super you might ask ???

Why not ?? There won't be another one quite like it ...

and because I can.....

here's what I'm working with so far....

Another week or 2 and then

More progress on the 55 dash graft. Note the left and right side "indents" to allow for full roll cage. Dash to me smoothed over to allow for new gauges, just a tac and a turbo boost

Decided to go with 1/2 cage vs. full cage. front cage just takes away from awesome '55 dash fabrication

More chop pics. Inner rear louvers painted prior to roof welding. A lot easier getting at least a good 1st. coat inside there while all apart eh ?

Some Topline suspensoins parts came today. Still need 4 wheel disc w/ slotted rotors to arrive

Ok, with a better view of the arse w/ the late decklid on (it's a 73 Super after all eh?) I'm likin it. No decklid standoffs. OR, remove the oval vents, but that'd be a shame eh ??

Look at the size of the windshield area w/ chop compared to stock windshield mold

The windshield A pillars will be cut where they adjoin the roof to conform with lower section (Rick, you're a master) and works well within the parameters of the windshield fiberglass mold.

and the 55 dash graft (what's left of it)

and a paint sample

Things are moving quickly now though. Roof is 100% fabbed, just needs finishing. Curve of roof is absolutely perfect, OG ragtop clip fit very well, esp. for a chopped roof. Windshield pattern is perfect. Front seats will prob. just have 1" cut off back legs. The windshield is exactly 25% smaller, doesn't even resemble a Super much, but just enough ;)

Some filler work on the ragtop. Not too much was required. Removable access panel for heater channels. Air ride air lines and some electrical will be ran through non-functional heater channels.

I'm so thrilled with how the roof has turned out. Look at the perfect curve in the roof. This is with 4" upfront and approx 2" at the B pillar -

More progress. Dashboard taking shape. Passenger side mirror mount and door top. I also had bearings pressed into rotors and installed rotors and calipers onto spindle & strut assembly. Just need to figure out strut bearing for air strut.

Here's some more body progress - drivers door top and passenger B pillar filler work after widening to conceal suicide door hinges

Additional bracing for air ride, suicide door bearclaws, and some interior body prep. Why the interior prep ? No headliner, all paint...

Bearclaw pegs on A pillar and custom rear 1/2 roll cage formed around seat belt bases and a good shot at the massive fabrication work involved in the suicide doors... Cage is more for show if anything, but it will be through bolted w/ a plate on the bottom of the pan. Can't wait to get beyond bodywork and paint....will need to take a freakin break....
