Default Use it or lose it? Input please.
Re:: 37 Wunderbug on my RPU

OK guys, I cant decide if I want to use this or not. I really like it but its gonna be a bunch of work bonding and molding in to the body. And in true Volksrodder fashion I had to cut it up to make it fit. I am thinking about trimming off some more where the green layout tape is.Anyway I know you guys will tell me exactly what ya think.

I think it looks cool as is. Though maybe the headlights a bit higher?

That looks like a real model!

Rob and Coby cut mine in about those spots to make it fit withthe 10" extension. I'm using big washers with the fender bolts to hold my front piece on...

I agree with the headlights higher. It will help fill that kinda empty/dead spot around the shock towers up to the high lines of the hood. I say keep that thing the way it is just improve it a little.

Seriously though, I am also not a fan of those but that looks REALLY good, I agree with mounting the lights higher though.

I like it with the RPU style cab. I think some longer pod style headlights mounted higher would better suit the front end.

I think the law at least in FL is 24" center of lights from the ground. I'm cheating a little with my headlights at about 19". When I make my front bumper and add a hoodbelt across the hood, after the downwards slope, it'll have the look I want.

Yeah Thrasher thats perfect. Fit an old pickup bed on that back with some rails to keep the body lines and ohhh baby she'll be fine. Mine is about breaking those lines cuz I like that look too.

Many thanks guys. I agree about the headlights. They were originally set for an early beetle hood. I did not take the time to remove them or relocate them since I got the Wunderbug front end about 4:00 pm yesterday.I came in this morning and laid out my cuts and went to work . Then I took a few photos for the thread after I had got it cut and half assed bolted on. I want to bond and smooth out this panel to look factory. So lots of work. Yes I know bolts and washers will hold it on, but I want a smoother look. But I must say I didnt see the bolts in tattooed pariah's car, looks cool as hell. Thanks again guys for your honest opinions. You fuel the flame that helps build the car, or truck should I say.

Thanks, I owe Rob, Cobey, and I think Matt a lot for everything they did for me at the Bay Area Volksrods Garage while I was away.

Originally, the washers were bright chrome and the fender bolts were dirty steel, but when I took some rattle can to the corner sections, I hit one of the bolts on accident and decided it was easier to paint the rest than clean that one up.. I'm happy with the end result though

There's actually even little 3x2x1/4 sections of aluminum or something under the washers too to help distribute the clamping power and ensure it stays held on.. I forgot about those until just now.. If you look really close between the drivers side headlight and turn signal (just up and to the right of the headlight) you can kinda see the edge of one of em..

Go with it.I wouldn't trim as much as your tape lines show though.Raise the head lights for sure.

How about both? Some sort of driving light low and tight and then more traditionally placed headlights. I like the look with them low as they sort of accentuate the hood's verticality but, who want's the hassle with the police.

I think they loook better up a little higher.

I'd also consider something below the grille. Maybe shorten up the grill a few bars, or add a chin to it and round off the corners a little. 40 fords arent' my favorite when fenderless. unlike t's and 30's fords, to me they just look too much like the fenders were left off.

Guess it's a good thing this front end is based on a '37 Ford!

The more I look at it the more I'd like to see some sort of quad light pod setup like the 60's show rods used quite often.

If it were mine...I'd NOT cut it so much...I think you are over doing it. The bottom marks are ok but as you go up & back I'd try to tie in the cuts to line up w/the quarterpanel/fender arch line. As far as the headlights go...ThrasherBill is right on with the later 1930's bullet lights.."but" a bit too high up-split the diff between what Bill drew and where you have'em now & that would work with the lines perfectly. And I do agree w/Bigchum550 "That looks like crap....send it to me and I will "get rid of" it for you..:)"
Look'in bitchen...keep on charging!

I have heard a lot of you guys mention headlight height laws. Tuesday officer Heddon with the NCDMV came to inspect my 65 mustang so it can be titled.I was telling him about the Volksrod and ask him specifically about headlight height laws in NC and his was response was there is no specified height in NC.

Seeing as you have no height requirement, I would place them low. Maybe not as low as now but. keep the top of light below a line half way up the grill.

And definitely lay off cutting up the nose too much until you are really sure.
