Default Bomber-themed Volksrod

I posted this originally in the intro section, but I'll probably need to advice to I'm going to repost it here so I can get replies.

My name is Jason and I'm currently living in Jacksonville, Florida. I work as a metal fabricator/welder for a specialty construction company. I also have my own metal sculpting business. I was looking for an inexpensive car to work on and a co-worker told me about a friend (Volksrodder member Dubshak1) with a volksrod project that he started but never finished. The top was chopped, but the radii were never finished. The shell was never attached to the pan. The engine was never fit and was missing a ton of parts. There was no glass. The list goes on. Despite all of that, I went to see it and that was it. I had to have it.

I don't know anything about Volkswagens and I have a pretty limited knowledge of cars in general. What I do know is welding. I'm hoping to use this bug as a showcase for my metal work. I'm looking to do a military/bomber theme with a touch of heavy metal and death.

I decided since the roof will be pretty much open, I'd remove the side windows and fill in the empty channel. It has to stay outside so I sprayed on some quick primer. It obviously needs some body work too.

Since I don't have any glass, I had an idea to mount the gas tank in the back window. I made it from 6" sch. 10 stainless pipe with two weld on pipe caps. In keeping with my bomber theme I made it look like the H-bomb. I made some brackets out of 1/4" aluminum and mounted that to sort of show-cage that I welded near the suspensions mounts.

Nice project. There is a ton of information on this site to help you out as well as some of the most knowledgeable VW folks around.

Nice project, I too took over someone elses project and made it my own. One suggestion, I wouldn't rely on the primer to keep it from rusting. Most primers are porous. There are some sprays you can use that will seal it until you are ready. But you will have to sand most of what primer you put over unsealed as rust will start underneath.

Oh and the bomb is real cool

PS I just got a set of torches and regulators and plan on doing some metal sculpting myself. I have sculpted in all sorts of material but never metal. I think I am going to have some fun.

That's a sweet looking project, and I love the bomb. As cars go, VWs are pretty simple. Post more pictures of your progress!

The car came with a brake and clutch pedal but no gas pedal. I made one from some 1/4" aluminum plate. It's a play on the old Mooneyes foot gas pedals.

He bought it at BugJam a few years back. It was already chopped, had an Oval window and the rear suspension was raised and the ft. flipped.

Yes Jason you do know me. You used to work at Creative and then went to Pizzazz for a while. I also used to work at Creative way before you went there I had left and went to Pizzazz. I work at Sally now. I am friends with Brad and met you a few times including Art Market and even at Creative and Pizzazz. Know who I am yet ?

Anyway, I know some people around here who can hook you up with what you need to make it happen. I can ever seem to get mine out of the Garage and am usually quite busy. Theres a few of us in the Jax/Middleburg and surrounding areas.

Hey Blood....Zim down here in G'ville. You got ahold of a great start there. I saw that car before someplace too. Welcome, and our paths will probably cross sometime in the future.

Jon, I do remember you. I didn't know you were into vw's. Small world, huh? How are things working out for you?

Zim, the car used to be black and white. The previous owner before Regan did an absolutely horrid chop. It had an extra body line up there too. Regan fixed the top but he never finished the radii.

Thanks for the offer, bluehormacha, but it has a rebuilt motor. It is missing a generator/alternator, distributor, and a bunch of other parts that are preventing me from firing it up. Cash is tight right now, so I'm working on the body and parts I can build with the metal I have.

I had a few extra doors sitting around and a few hours to screw around today. I'm debating doing a split windshield. Is it legal? Will this car ever be totally street legal?

Everything is legal in Florida. Things are good, I am at Sally now.
How did you now know I was into VW's ? With the VW shirts, the Bug GoKart mold, plus the VW parts and large remote control Bus at Pizzazz.

I'll look around and see what I got for parts.

I never saw all that cool-sounding stuff at Pizzazz. I just started working there. I heard about the bug gokart and I'm totally jealous.
