Default I'm never gonna get my car finished...
Re:: ...if I don;t stop with shit like this!!!!

My neighbor got tired of dealing with his riding lawn mower and asked me if I wanted it. Since it was given to him, he just paid it forward.

The thing was in a real mess....wiring hacked to hell, two flat tires, one of which was seperated from the rim... cutting deck rusted....etc.

So, I set to repairing the wiring. Found a wiring schematic online so I just replaced everything. Got the two flat tires to inflate and then finally got the damn thing to start up. Road it around the yard for a spell and worked out all the cobs webs. Dropped the cutting deck and cut the whole back yard without any problem. I was pretty happy with it. I drove it under the carport and parked it.....this is where everything changed.

The two tires I inflated had already lost a fair amount of pressure, so I decided to just replace all 4 tires, since these were dry rotted anyways. Bought a new battery and ordered a few OEM parts from the manufacturer website. As I tore it down to replace the broken parts and what not, I decided to paint the hood and rear fenders.

Got everything repaired and put back together and something just didn't look right.....so, off came the pieces again..... my bad habits had kicked in. The mower needed something....some paint....since the hood and rear fenders were newly painted, I decided to do the rest of it.

And this is how it is setting right now...it just got oo damn hot this afternoon to keep working on it....I'll get back on it this evening.

I still have to strip and paint the foot pads and the center cover for the shift lever. The cutting deck is nearly done, so I can primer and paint it to prevent the rust from coming back. Still have to pull the front tires off and paint the rims.....oh, and install a new fold down boat seat ($29 from Academy compared to $150 for OEM).

My wife still thinks I'm crazy, even though she has watched me do this shit so many times before and knows there will probably be many more to come.

My chop top project will get pulled to the forefront in another couple of weeks.

we have an old MTD also, but red 42" cut~

That looks sharp
Where did you find info on these things? Ours has a "I refuse to restart again until tomorrow ,after a 24hr cool down after any amount of time running" problem. He refuses to fix it, But it has many years left in it and needs a new front axle (?) plus steering linkage and I would love to repaint it too

Now all you need is some old skool stripes on it :)

If you lift your seat up, you should have a MTD tag with your Model number, etc.
Just plug that into the parts page and select your proper mower.

Ah, yep, been to that site, problem is, mine is a 20yo, they claim they no longer handle parts for it
It was a walmart special my dad bought. The tag is faded vinyl and only thing showing is the 'made in the USA' with a waving American flag and a phone number which is no longer in service.............
Mom couldn't find the owners manual to it when he died 8 yrs ago. Oh well, have welder, have grinder, will fix

And just to keep my rep alive...........

Is it done yet?

Try calling your local Sears part depot. They should be able to help you. There is one by my house and they have helped me with non-Sears items.

Are you at least going to lower it and install headers?

Header...Yes, still looking for the right look.

Lower.....just the cutting deck, I still have to be able to use it as a freaking lawn mower.

Damn, it's been hot today. I managed to get the whole mower back together and ready to mow. I still have to decide on the seat, but for now I put the old one on so I could cut the grass this evening. I still have to take the front wheels off to paint the rims and replace the last worn out tire. I have several paint issues to correct and straighten up, but that will wait for a rainy day or at least a cooler one.

After mowing the yard, I realized I forgot to put on the new blades......that should be fun now that the deck is back on the mower. Woulda been much easier when it was off. I also need to order the textured foot rest pad to put back on. And lastly, I'm on the look out for a cool steering wheel to put on it.

Hubby always puts our rider on the hyd. jack, easier than sticking your arm up under or thru the shoot opening.

It came out looking really nice!
An idea, instead of ordering the foot pad, why not just get the traction/nonslip tape and put some strips in between the holes? Might be cheaper and will serve the same purpose, plus can get locally maybe?

Yeah, I\ll have to walk the aisles at Home Depot and Lowes to see what I can find. MTD wants $32 for a set. Get this though..it;s 20 for one side and 12 for the other...they are labeled left and right but if you look at them, they are identical. Go figure.

Nice work on making it look better and fixing some of the mechanical issues. Have you changed any of the fluids?

We have a local equipment shop we get blades from, 2.5 acres, eats them quick. $28 for 3 blades on ours. We have a poulan now, 2 blades at $32, they are similar to razor backs? or the gator blades? have slots cut in the back lifted edge, suppose to last longer. We have alot of sand. Local lawn guys swear they do last, so we'll see. But check around for an outside the box supplier. Even for a few bucks more, compare the blades, heavier, thicker, sometimes worth the extra penny. Your yard looks like ours did, alot of sand showing, it eats blades fast~

It is good to bump in a quickie project like this in the middle of a long ass project like your bug. I went through a couple little side projects during just to break it up and come back fresh.

I have been considering ripping into my old rider too. It seems I repair it as much as I ride it.
