I have an intro thread with the build, however I'd like some feedback from my fellow Volksrodders...

This car started it Volksrod life back in the early 80's.. It was chopped and destined to become a drag car.. However after the original owners chopped it and had a great amount of time in the body, they decided to not race it.. In fear that there hard work might get crashed.. So to the back burner it went, and some 30 years later I got my hands on it ..

This is the day I brought the body home..

Let the cutting begin...

The floor pan is from a '56 that we put new pan halves on & did a 4" torsion lift..

Out front I added a Tin Beater 8" beam extender with an adjustable beam w/ CB drop spindles.. And in the rear a 4" torsion lift plus a 2" trans lift.. With the addition of plates from the Samba, that put the axles above the spring plates..

Built a shift tower box..

Started adding some copper accents..

Looks good so far? I am concerned about the center of the roofline on the chop, above the windshield. Looks "turned in"?

I hear ya on that one.. it's actually straight above the window.. it's the paint that gives it that illusion...

Hopefully it is an optical illusion, but the rear torsion looks crooked.

For steering, I decided that a fit the bill nicely..

Did all the brakes and threw on a set of temporary wheels to roll it around..

first test run with the body resting on the pan.. rolled her outta the garage to enjoy the sun..

Life took some changes at this point.. and the car didn't get much attention for the next year..

Thanks guys...

So during taking time off from working on the car, I got engaged, and bought a house..

Now that we're all moved in, it was time to crank up the speed on the project..

Ordered up some tall skinny Cheater slicks from HURST...

Had them cut with a custom tread pattern..

Test fit with the new tires and the apron removed..

Had to do a little more trimming to clear the tires..

switched to working on the front end.. got the tie rods built..

Then worked on re-shaping the front fender wells..

Scored some old flathead V8 rods & twisted them into headlight mounts..

That's all for the moment, gotta head out to the shop to get some work done..

Thank you..

I have talked with the person who chopped it 30 years ago.. He runs a local VW repair shop..
They used 3 different roofs and hundreds of hours to get the look they wanted..

Thanks Rostibug.!!

The headlights are NOS BOSCH Off Road lights.. They are roughly 8" across & have a heavilycon-caved lens..

So with the addition of the steering rack, the gas tank needed to be raised.. So braces were made and welded in place..
Test run to see how it fits..

Hammered out some tank hold downs..

Added a copper border to the tank, and finished the other strap..

Even after I raised the tank, a relief was still needed to clear the steering shaft..

Just in case you're wondering, yes those are copper tubes brazed into the steel brace..

Back to work in the shop, gotta get the motor ready to go in this week...

Got some work done on the motor last night.. removed the thin line sump to add a bigger sump, and got the heater boxes yarded off..

Here's a little more of what's been done to rear section of the build..

mocked up some EMPI rear fender tubs.. Hope they hold up okay ;)

Sheet metal cut & tubs put in place..

spent a good couple hours with the welder..

Made a rear body mount support..

will post more shortly, it's time to get some work done...

I like the way you cut the wheel well and sliced up amd bent the fender mount services to make tabs for easier and better wheel well mount..(at least that is what I think you did.)

My plan was similar but I was going to use a 4`wide sheet metal for a single all the way across style wheel well...Mono-well? lol

The beetle body is less then 4`wide and tapers inward at it goes upward, so it it would make a thin fender. I hope this idea works out...

Given the hard earned reputation of EMPI

around here, I'm guessing the boxes are probably
better than the contents in most applications.

Got some work done over the last couple days.. Finally got the motor in.. Now just need to fine tune the suspension..

Here's some more pics of what she looks like..

Rear panels made to support the rear of the floor pan..

I'm not sure who's run into this before.. I've done a 4" torsion lift and a 2" trans lift & I want to run a decklid without cutting a hole in it for the Generator pulley..

Any suggestions or thoughts on this matter..?

I thought maybe going the Type 3 route would work, but no..

The top of the Generator pulley hits.. And with a Type 1 set up, the shroud hits the hinges & the pulley hits the decklid.

So, I figured it was time to work on something else at the moment & let my mind ponder the situation..

I started by sanding down the hood..

Then I figured I'd paint it with the color chosen for the project..

So far I'm digging it..

Now back to focusing on engine, adjusting the rear suspension, and building seat mounts..
