Ideas for the 71 SB
I just purchased my first bug as a project do work on with my 10 yr old and my 12 yr old. Trying to keep them involved in something that can be a hell of alot of fun as a family and have something they can be proud of in the end. Something they can look at and say I did that. I have completed a few restorations and projects over the yrs: body off resto on a '72 Chevelle, and a rat '30 Chrysler coupe were the big ones. I've also built demolition derby cars for several years(lots of fun). Not knowing much about bugs I bought what I thought was a '69 beetle, because it was titled as such. To this point all I knew about bugs was I wanted a pre '70 bug and thought I had found one. The title matched the VIN and the price was right so I bought it. Turns out I ended up with a '71 super beetle with a '69 title. Not sure what's going on with that, but the DMV was happy to give me a title in my name so all is well with that part. Now, what to so with a super beetle? The car is good enough to restore, but there would definately be better candidates out there. I've always been a fan of doing things my way. Anyone have some SB ideas out there that might spark some imagination for me? Theres the baja direction, the slammed route maybe chopped also...could just restore it. Maybe there are some cool SB pics floating around here somewhere. Most every car I've seen that I liked was not a SB. I'm sure something cool can be done, but what? Thanks.

Re: Ideas for the 71 SB
I forgot to mention I'm in the process of pulling the motor and trans for a good refresh on both. Not matter what the project is, it has to run. Thought I might save someone a post here. Thanks.

Re: Ideas for the 71 SB
OK man, there is a Super Beetle question about every 4 hours around here. Go up to the header, up top, and click on search...type in what you want search for and do it. Anything you have seen done to a standard Beetle can be done to a Super. There are lots of parts and ideas out there. We usually don't restore cars on this site, we and sometimes .
Looks like a good project, so look around the site and decide what ya wanna do.

Re: Ideas for the 71 SB
1, are your kids interested?
2, if not, decide what YOU want to do with it
3, it's super, front struts
4, do as Parker said
5, it's yours, don't wait for us to tell you.
(where the hell are all these supers coming from? have Standards disappeared or do people just like the extra challenge? )
btw, welcome to the dark side

Here ya go. it is a 74 SB. I am doing a 71SB so is a kid that lives near me (71vdub). From what I have gathered it is $350 extra to stretch the front wheels out there than for a bug. Dbug has all the stuff for it. Search around Utube there is stuff from all over the world on there to give you ideas. Have fun, make sure the boys are up on there tetanus shots!

Re: Ideas for the 71 SB
I guess I should have been more clear about what I was asking for. Sure it's a turd. I want a kick ass turd though. If that's possible. I was looking for ideas that you haven't seen on other cars. It would be too easy to take a picture and make the car look like the picture with some store bought parts and some paint or lack there of. That's not the direction I want to go. If returning the car to its original form was my goal, I would have no questions. I know this isn't really the place for that. I have spent days and days looking at pics and alot of these seem to look the same. That is, until I found this site. So I thought I would ask those that have chopped and cut and welded and beat around on one of these. Done it before to the '30 Chrysler, just not a bug.

Yup, we follow the rules... and the rules state that those that can take a little initial ribbing stay and the rest run away with their tails tucked up in their manginas!

No just the stupid ones who don't know how to search and do what THEY want to do to THEIR OWN CARS!
You can always avoid being the STUPID new member by reading, watching and using the SEARCH BUTTON.
Don't worry about being the only stupid new member. There are quite a few of you lately. I just narrowed you out this time.

Hahaha. No tail tucking here. I can take it. As long as you can take it back, when it's deserved of course.

TurdMaster, don't feel bad, my turd doesn't even have floors in it right now! And I am with you on not wanting to redo something that has already been done. If I see one more Black and chrome Harley, or Red corvette, I might just shit! That Is why I like our SB's, even LESS of them have been chopped up! Welcome to the site!

Re: Ideas for the 71 SB
Point taken. My fault for looking for asking about original ideas from people who have obviously enjoyed bugs for a while. People whose opinions and ideas might spur some creativity. Thanks for your opinion. If I wanted to search for the something I know where the search bar is. Most of the things that come up regarding an SB when I do the search is a bunch of posts just like this, telling someone to use the search bar. That's very funny, just not very helpful. I can appreciate that it gets old have new people asking questions that you have answered a dozen times before. If I was looking for something specific, I will find it without asking a question. I'm sure it's on here somewhere. I was looking for ideas and opinions. Thanks.

Re: Ideas for the 71 SB
There are stock, chopped, dropped, widened, baja'd, front engine, mid engine and rear V8 supers here.
If you want some one to tell you what to do, then get the thing running, stable, safe, and have fun with the kids in it. Let them surf for ideas, but be warned, it's not exactly PG around here.
This is what we do to find out who you are. The last 2 guys survived

I don't mind any of this. It's better than the real work I'm supposed to be doing right now, and...there are car people here. Couldn't ask for much more.
