Building the wife a baja volksrod
My brother bought this project a few years ago, did nothing with it and passed it on to me. It was a project for the guy he got it from also. It is a 67 and came to me like this with a locked up 1600. I yanked the motor and am getting a 1640 exchange to put in.

Re: Building the wife a baja volksrod
Pulled the fenders off, started the body work, it will stay the red and black patina. It came with and adjuster already installed in the front so I clocked it as low as it would go then lowered the rear to match up. I wish it was welded to go lower, I may cut it apart and redo it. I would like to stay fenderless, but I am not sure yet on the direction this will wind up. I am actually building this for my wife, I have to many toys and need to make her happy but it has to be cool to.

Re: Building the wife a baja volksrod
I plan on getting it done within 2 months. Fortunately or unfortunately depending how you look at it, I tore my knee up and will be getting surgery and will be off work for a month or two so I will have alot of time to mess with it.

Re: Building the wife a baja volksrod
Well plans change. Figured I will take my time with it so I bought her a 1968 vw that is on the road. Got it for a good price and now we just need to make it ours. Spray bomb purple minutes before we drove it home. Last owner did it for his daughter and has a baja. He is joined the site once I told him about it.

Re: Building the wife a baja volksrod
Customizing already started. The interior is now black thanks to fabric paint and the dash pad is gone. Going to do a quick and dirty paint job on it. Not letting the cat out of the bag yet though, but here it is in prime. Using tractor primer and paint cause its self leveling, great for stopping rust and tuff as nails. Plus tractor supply carries it.

Okay, my guess is that the Tractor Primer didn't hold up so well.
Is the Baja done yet?

Bigguy wins, Herbie from herbie goes bananas. We are just waiting on the graphics. Still working on the baja. I have to decide how extreme I want to go with it now that its for me.

Re: Building the wife a baja volksrod
are you building it as a baja for yourself? or a baja volksrod for yourself?
if you are still going baja volksrod, molding the hood and nose together looks pretty sweet. I think I've seen it done somewhere on here before, LOL

Re: Building the wife a baja volksrod
I am going to build the baja for myself now as a baja volksrod. Thinking I am gonna chop the roof and put a steel hood on but run cut fenders. Going to get a beam extension to. I want to chop the front fenders like i did the rear and see if they look right with a beam extension. Question is 8" or 10". 8" would probably look better with fenders.

Re: Building the wife a baja volksrod
I went fenderless 10 inch on mine. Grafted the hood and nose together. Then didn't like it and got a steel hood.

Re: Building the wife a baja volksrod
Didn't get much done on the baja since the rusty Herbie project started. I did get the fenders chopped into something I like. I also ordered an 8" beam extension from Dbug41's volksrod shop. The back is the height I want with the 275s and the front will obviously get 2.5" lower with the extension and get new tires.

Re: Building the wife a baja volksrod
Got the graphics on the wife's rusty Herbie rat, just waiting on the bumpers. Once the bumpers are on this was all done for less than 2k bucks

Re: Building the wife a baja volksrod
NICE!!! That Faux rust is just cool..... I just watched the movie with my Hotrod girl(5yr old daughter) and just smiled when I saw the rusty Herbie, knowing yours was coming along!
She also declared she wanted us to build her a Herbie clone for her first car!! yeah, she's awesome!!! Makes me proud!
Under $2K as it sits, eh... Not bad!!!

Re: Building the wife a baja volksrod
Thanks, I know there's a few Herbie's on the road, but I have never seen a rusty one.
Almost forgot, we took it for a quick ride, still waiting on some tuneup parts, but everyone was waiving and honking. We even had people pull in the driveway taking pictures. There will be no going unnoticed in rusty herbie.

Re: Building the wife a baja volksrod
Correct bumpers are on and tune up is done. Finally figured the sputtering out, it was a pinched/broken +wire to the coil. Oh well it doesn't hurt to give all new tune up parts anyway. Now back to the 67 since the beam extender cam. Hope to get that on this week.
