volksrod darting all over the road?
hi i recently picked up a volksrod project. everything is pretty much set up on the car, but on a test ride, the car darts to the left and right. i had the car aligned and it helped a little bit, but the car is still incredibly hard to control and drive. it will not drive straight normally it seems like i have to constantly fight the wheel to keep it straight. is this normal or is there something wrong? i thought a suspension piece might be loose but i havent been able to find anything. has this happened to anybody else and has anyone found a solution? thanks - dave

Re: volksrod darting all over the road?
post pics of the front end and let us see. Sounds as if the front is lowered to much causing bump steer due to improper tie rod geomatry.

Re: volksrod darting all over the road?
Need caster shims behind the bottom tube up front.
If the rear is a swing & has ALOT of camber the rear sometimes feels like it kicks out to the left or right on wet roads. OR the rear center axle nut isn't tight enough.

axle nuts are definitely tight i already checked those. it doesnt feel like the rear is sliding out it just darts back and forth.

Re: volksrod darting all over the road?
That axle setup looks like one that was originally sold by RoadsterCliff who is a member on here. This is a link to his website http://www.vwstreetrod.com/vwstreetr...etrod.com.html
I would suggest going to the "contact us" page and talk to him about it.
Nice looking volksrod there Dave!

Re: volksrod darting all over the road?
Hopefully, there is a panhard rod running off to the side we can't see. But from the pics I can't see what locates the front axle besides the shocks and the drag link.
Nice looking ride though.

Re: volksrod darting all over the road?
axle angle tipped back..caster? should be 5 to 7 or more I think mine is like 9 degrees also if you used the hole in the steering box arm that is shorter it will speed up the steering. Make sure the panhard is close to level..

Re: volksrod darting all over the road?
Any of you guys run a steering dampener? One couldn't hurt here once the setup is correct.

Re: volksrod darting all over the road?
I saw that car and met the builder at a Wall Stadium Cruise night. He took it on track for parade laps and it looked fine then. I know he bought all the parts from the same guy in CA, I think. Good luck, neat car.

Re: volksrod darting all over the road?
Just a small hijack...but the Moon Eyes on your V-Rod reminded me of this. Back in the sixties one of my buddies had a VW his folks had given him for High School, and they wouldn't let him do anything to her. He found a Moon Eyes decal that read "Soon Equiped, presently stock." And now back to our regular thread.

Re: volksrod darting all over the road?
I don't see a panhard rod either. Our's wandered until we put one on. We have a shock on the drag link also.

Re: volksrod darting all over the road?
Thunder and V8 are right on the money. If you could push the bolts out on the lower mount of the hairpins and pull back the tops, you might get a hair better caster.
Radial or bias-ply? Check to make sure you don't have rads in back and bias in front or vice versa. I've heard some run it like that with no probs while others have cars that aren't even drivable. It looks like you have radial Silverstones.

Re: volksrod darting all over the road?
I once had a car with radial tires in back & bias up front, it was all over the road at speeds over 40 MPH, I put the radials up front & the bias in back & it drove a little better, was like driving a new car after putting radials on all 4 corners

I just love it, when people post their problems,
frequently alignment related; someone trying to
help asks for specific details and they get nothing.
No reply, no details, nothing.
Why bother posting in the first place ?
Maybe this guy can help:

Originator was last seen here @9:49 am today~
Maybe it was something stupid and he's too embarrassed to tell it.
Guess others will have to learn the hard way then maybe they will tell us other inquiring minds....................
