Re: What CC is a motor?
google "vw displacement chart"
also try "measuring vw type 1 crank"
or "measuring vw type 1 cylinder"
or "using creative thinking and a search engine to solve simple word problems"

Re: What CC is a motor?
For type I engines...
Visually, you really can't. The engine number found under the generator/ alternator stand will tell you what the engine was when new, but that doesn't mean that is what it is now. If you're pretty sure it is still a stock size then that will get you close.
If you're tearing it down you can measure the pistons/ cylinders and assume it is a stock 69mm crank. The pistons will have the size engraved in the top but you may have to clean all the carbon buildup off to see it.

Re: What CC is a motor?
What's up with that exhaust? Seems a limitless stopped up. With rotted heater boxes on it and the doghouse shroud I'd guess a 1600. What carb and distributor are on it? 12 or 6 volt gen?

Re: What CC is a motor?
Here is what I found on theSamba
20- Pre-Jan., 1956 25hp/36hp
20- prefix indicates Type 2 and is not part of the sequential engine number.

Re: What CC is a motor?
Take a head off and measure the bore and stroke ... Convert the values to cm then a simple calculation ...
Volume of a cylinder = radius^2 * pi * height ... so for four cylinders ...
((bore/2) * (bore/2)) * 3.14 * stroke * 4 = almost exact capacity ( pi is a bit too truncated at 3.14 but good enough)

I hate to be an ass, not really, but that's a 26-######, not a 20-######. And there is no way that is a 25 or 36 Hp case. The gen. stand was cast into the case on those and thus wouldn't have nuts holding it on. It does have the mounting holes for the mustache bar though, so it could be a bus case. Then again, there is no suffix (i.e. AB, AH....) The carb appears to have an electric choke, but as many of us know, in the VW world, most shit will work with most other shit. So you have what you have... A case that is possibly 1500-1600 and may be rebuildable.

Re: What CC is a motor?
Half this engine looks like it pre-dates my understanding. I think Barry Bonds made this one.... you can do anything on the roids. I will agree with the Dean on most of it though.... from a bus, and if it was rebuilt anytime after 1975 it's very likely that it's a 1600 now. Love that oversized vaccume advance and that insaine looking fule pump.
2 more things
Is that a radiatior cap on the top?
Do those Luger scilencers on the tail pipes really work?
Edit: yeah... there are not too many those at all.
Type-2 1200cc(or smaller) microbus, may 1950-dec 1955
Samba lists as.
20-Pre-Jan. 1956 25hp/36hp

Re: What CC is a motor?
Are you sure there's not a number 1 in front of the 26- at the beginning of the engine ID???

After some digging I found the engine size/year, however it seems there is alot of parts that were upgraded or changed for other years and types of the same engine.
However it dose not expain why his has the radiator dog house, those old things may get hot.... but not that much it would ever need to be water cooled. I do however like the look of the open heater channels, looks like it might be worth cutting a few open for the heat shims.

Re: What CC is a motor?
I think that a gas tank in front Doc.
Dont think you were being an Ass at all Dean
It was throwing me to.
From what I could find the 2 was the important part not the
number after. Which just meant it was from a type 2.
Thats all I could find on it.
