Talking Rising from the ashes......

Well, my dreams of building a Vrod truck are starting to gain momentum!
During a recent local CL perusal, I found this ugly little gem.. It's a Dumas (style?) flat bed, with a lot of tubing for bumpers and "roll bar"... The PO brought it out for spring service and was out for a cruise when it died on him... He coasts to the shoulder, and gets out to investigate and sees flames from the engine! He didn't have an extinguisher with him, and by the time the basement savers did their part this is what was left. It really isn't that bad, as far as metal damage(not much metal left back there after the conversion..).. Lots of melted fiberglass and interior soft bits, but that all goes away for my version anyway!
Someone may be able to salvage the rear of cab fiberglass piece too... But not me! That tops coming off!

Do you plan on painting flames on your roadster as a tribute to its' past?

Question Re: Rising from the ashes......

Anyone have thoughts on either using beetle doors, or an actual cab back from an old pickup to close out my cab? I've seen builds on here using either method, but curious as to which worked out better, and which is more straight forward.

I'm a newb welder and will be learning A Lot on this RPU!!

Just looked again and couldn't find it. Don't remember what keyword made it pop up before but it wasn't an obvious 'vw' one.

Question Re: Rising from the ashes......

I've located a early 50's Chevy bed in good condition! My build won't be show queen, but won't be a tetanus rod either.... I'm going for solid and useable... Not sure how I will finish the body, wether paint, or strip to bare metal and clear coat.....?? Time will tell.

Anyone have build pics from and RPU showing how the beds are supported? I'm thinking a full subframe, but also have thought about a couple "legs/pedestals" at the corners to set it on....

Thoughts?

Also found an S10 split bench with center console/armrest! It's in decent shape, but will get recovered with all new vinyl once all the heavy building is done!

I'm guessing that you won't be using the full length of the bed and will carrying fairly light loads. If I recall correctly the bed had 'cross pieces' running from side to side. You could run two 1" square 3/16" wall tubes at each side to support the cross pieces. Run three "legs" (of the above material) as you described, at each side for support.

I spent today stripping the toasty girl down! Now I can start planning the build going forward.

I've got some custom ideas in my head that I need to start sketching out before I forget them!

Love to make progress!

I think I get the gist here.... It does sound viable, as there are cross braces under the bed floor... Might as well take advantage of them...

As far as length, I'm not sure what I'll do yet... It's 48" wide, so I'll need to measure and see if it'll need to be narrowed at all. I also plan on putting sheet metal back in so that the cab covers the whole floor pan area, to include the battery tray. I know that will mess with the proportions in regards to bed length... I'll just have to see what works!!!
The bed will be hinged, so the "legs" you described will be great for it to rest on when in the "closed" position... Won't be hauling much more than camp chairs and some tools...

Sooooo..... Looks like I have to pass on the Chevy bed, and just design one and phone a friend to bend it up...
The chev bed is 4' wide and 6 1/2' long..... I'd have to narrow it at Least 4", and shorten it at Least 2 1/2' to make the proportions right...... That's a lot of chopping to do on an original solid GM bed... Especially with its $500 price tag..

Glad I measured first, that'd been an expensive lesson.....

We don't got no stinkin rules!! Just vision, materials, and effort!
I'm a newb welder, so this ones gonna be all sorts of learning experiences!

I've lurked enough on plenty of builds here that I have a decent idea of what I need to do, it's just making it all reality that's gonna be the most fun!!

On the Zimrod (Z-rod) I used nutserts on the tunnel and just used the stock body mounts by the shock towers. It was plenty string for that bed since the entire rear area was just an engine surround.

Interesting thought, using the stock mounts on the shock towers..... Mine is IRS, so it will be a tad different there(I think?) but not much... I do like how your bed went outside the shock towers with nothing but axle and swing arm on the outside of the bed panel... Very clean...

Picked up the butt holder yesterday! Came out of an S10..

Enlisted my HotRod girl to pull some hog rings!

And down the the bones! Turns out it's a custom built seat. Nicely done, but needs narrowed by 3-4" to fit comforably(currently 50" wide..)

Haven't decided if I want to keep the whiplash restraints.... Or maybe just shorten them a bit... It'll sit low in the cab, so they won't be too abrupt above the cab line...

By narrowing them, are you talking about in the console area? Looks like a good start!

Yes.. I wanna leave the center seat as useable for the occasional cruise with Both my kiddos.. Thankfully they're still smallish and can use a 6" wide seat!! Lol

Having the cup holders will be nice too! I Just got cup holders in Our Thing and Man does it make a difference!! Lol

Parts have started arriving!! Tires/ wheels ordered today!!!
Here is a teaser shot for contrast color!

Thinking an antique white or cream color to oppose this.
