Default I got some bad news yesterday

Well I have tried to plan for this since March of last year, but no matter how much you prepare for it, it never eases the pain, my mom never calls me, but yesterday I got a call from her, I knew before answering my phone what it was gonna be, my grandma passed away yesterday morning at 103 years old, just almost made it to 103-1/2 years (after 90 your aloud to count 1/2 years, after 100 your aloud to count 1/4 years if you ask me)
Anyways, she was up in her chair early yesterday morning, she got helped back in bed, when they checked on her about 20 minutes later she had passed in her sleep

I'm grateful for every moment I got to spend with her over the past few years, I last saw here on September 9th, I knew then her days were coming to an end, she knew who I was, asked me to leave when she got tired, she lived a very GREAT life, she put the saying "you never slow down, you never grow old" she only slowed down at 97-1/2 when she slipped on some ice & broke her hip, the summer before she was still gardening, pulling weeds, digging holes to plant flowers, shrubs & whatever else she wanted to do, she was a very healthy woman, she only took a baby aspirin a day for many years, her secret to living a long healthy life was when she boiled her vegetables she dumped the water into a coffee cup & drank it once it cooled down, I have been doing the same for the last few years
I still remember her calls to pass on advice about certain foods that helped with diabetes, she always tried to help me when it came to that disease, I was very fortunate to have her in my life for so long, most people don't get that many years with their grandparents
I'm just glad she finally let go, she finally joined her husband & son who passed away this passed Christmas Eve & never knew

She will be missed dearly

Ron

Sad news Ron... Prayers your way. Knowing you were not too distant makes me feel good for you having been around her lately even.

Sorry buddy. Hang in there. You have a great (yet twisted) support group here!
My grandma passed at 101. She had lost most of her hearing and vision but still played piano for the "old folks" at the nursing home.

Sorry for your loss. I lost my Aunt and my Grandma in the same year, 4 years ago. It still hurts.

Thank ya's all, I appreciate it

Jeff, you say a "twisted" support group, that's what I love about this place
Just so ya's know this will most likely be a purty long read

So yesterday we laid her to rest, so as we were escorting her into the church, I couldn't help or hide my joy & laughter when all the fun & funny things we & she had done over the years started to rush into my mind, after all, not many people live that long, plus I'm one who mourns someone's death the day or two after learning of their death, I truly believe after that, it should be a time to celebrate that person's life

The saying "You Never Slow Down You Never Grow Old" she definitely proved it to be true, she didn't slow down until she broke her hip at 97-1/2 years old, she slipped on a very small patch of ice the day after Christmas while carrying a small bag of trash to the curb to put in the trash can she brought out the night before, she called my mom on her cell phone to come down & help her up, she said she slipped & fell hurt her leg & needed help up, by the time my mom got to her a neighbor saw her laying on the ground in her robe & stopped to help, he was an EMT headed to work, he told my mom it looked as if she broke her leg, my mom said she acted like most people do if they get a small splinter in their finger, they helped her in my mom's car & went to the ER where she learned she broke the ball off of her hip, they did a partial hip replacement & sent her home a few days later, she was told she had to give up gardening, that's when she started to grow old, but she continued to live alone until a few months before her 102nd B-day, when she was on the phone talking to her youngest daughter who lives in another state & the phone suddenly went quiet in the middle of a sentence, my aunt called my mom on her cell phone & told my mom what happened & told her to go check on her, my mom lives just a 1/2 mile up the street, when my mom walked in my grandma was laying on the floor with a small puddle of blood next to her head, she fell & busted the right side of her head, went to the ER & had to get 6 stitches, it was kind a funny because the next day Trina & I visited her in the hospital, she would point to the left side of her head & say "look I bumped my head & got 6 stitches", yup, she was pointing to the wrong side, again, she was a tough woman
So her doc said she shouldn't be left to live alone anymore, my wife & I volunteered to live with her a few days a week at her house so she could live the rest of her life at home, nobody else offered, so my mom & her brother & sister decided to move her into a Retirement/Assisted living home, it was a really nice place, she lived there until this past April when she fell at the retirement home & re-broke her hip again, they did a complete hip replacement this time, the surgeon didn't wanna do it since she was 7 weeks away from her 103rd B-day, but he did it & she made it thru the surgery like someone half her age, this time they advised that she shouldn't be left alone in fear she would try to get up & walk on her own, most older people don't live thru a second hip break, so they put her in a nursing home, that's when her mind started showing signs of dementia

She out lived he only son, she never knew he passed as they recommended not telling her, my wife who I swear has psychic abilities & has become very spiritual over the past 17 years (I have as well), she said her son probably came to her in a dream that morning & she followed him to the "other side", I believe that as well

I'm very grateful to have been very close to her, I started cutting my grandparent's grass back in 1989 & continued until the summer of her 2011, she suffered from Macular Degeneration & she would tell me her grass didn't need to be cut when some parts were really high, I started going down once a week anyway, but she insisted it was a waste of time & gas, so my mom decided to have a lawn service place cut it, called & talked to her all the time

One of my favorite memories was on my Birthdays, ever since I can remember she would call me & sing Happy Birthday with a music box that was much older than I, the weather was so bad during my B-day they could never visit me, 2 years ago (3 years ago this January) when I ended up at the ER on my B-day, she called & left it on my answering machine, I saved it to my computer, then on the voice recorder on my phone just so I can hear her sing to me every year, next year I'm gonna start calling my mom, my aunt, & all my cousins & continue to let them hear her sing Happy Birthday to them every year

Again thank you for all your support, I Greatly Appreciate it

Ron

Yeah I had 51 years with her, most people don't even get to meet their grand parents, the ones that do only have a few years with them, I consider myself very lucky she had such a long & healthy life, hell I was 15 when my life changed, I was 38 when I became a grand parent, something I honestly didn't think I'd ever live long enough considering my health situation the past 16 years

A few days ago I had a memory of my G'ma (short for grandma) from a year & a half ago, a few months before her 102nd B-day, just 3 months before she could no longer be left alone after she fell & bumped her head
Anyway she called me up one evening after she was looking thru a calendar she kept notes on, everybody's B-days & other stuff, so in 1981 I was diagnosed with diabetes, in 1993 she was watching a TV show & they mentioned something about apricots or possibly avocados, but they said how if eaten regularly could help regulate one's blood sugar, even tho I no longer had type 1 diabetes she called to let me know, she even mentioned all the other things apricot's/avocados helped do for one's health & how she was gonna have my mom start buying her 1 or 2 a week, I need to find that calendar & the stack of notes with it, I know it had much more info about healthy foods, I mean hey, she didn't live to be 103 for nothing & up until almost 102 she took care of herself, my G'pa died in 98
I now think back to all the wonderful advice she shared with me about staying healthy, maybe as I remember them, or my mom finds these notes, I'll share them with y'all here, or start a Thread dedicated to her long healthy life she had

One of them was, she took a baby aspirin a day for I couldn't tell ya's how long, it's most likely on that calendar or in the stack of notes, I've been taking a regular full strength aspirin for dang near 16 years now, possibly longer when my kidney Doc told me to start taking 1, I told him about my G'ma
Another one was, & it's not on any note, she told me this all the time when I was a kid, when she boiled her vegetables, she took the water & poured it into a coffee cup after it cooled off enough to drink, she said all the nutrients ended up in that water, I've been doing that every once in a while, I should do it every single day, I could eat green beans every single day

My dad does the baby aspirin thing too. 87 and still movin'!
Jeff
P.S. Fresh green beans are amazing! My inlaws grow them and we eat them by the steamed bowlful! My grandma (from Kentucky) made these green beans, potatoes and bacon that NOBODY in the family can replicate! (I think she used about 10 sticks of butter!) They were just... UGH, let me climb in the pot!

I grow green beans too

My other grandma, was from Kentucky too, she made the best green beans, she'd put them in a pressure cooker & start them early in the morning, dinner was ready around 4:30, they would be a lot darker when they were done, she used a bunch a butter too & I'm purty sure she cooked them with ham & potatoes, Archie Campbell from the TV show in the 70's Hee Haw was her cousin,
My grandma that just passed said she cooked the nutrients out of them, but she lived until her mid 70's, she got a brain tummer, they took it out, then a few years later she got dementia or alzheimer, then she died, was kinda funny, just before she had to go into a nursing home, her sister came up from Corbin Kentucky & moved in with her, she would make green bean sandwiches, I hate nursing homes, if I can help it I'll never send my mom to one

The only time I ever had beans that tasted like hers was at a buffet style dinner at a hotel down at Lake Cumberland, we camped & rented house boats from there between 1997 & 2002, the name of the place was State Dock, then we started going to Green River Lake, the lake wasn't nearly as big, but it was just as nice & everything was a lot cheaper, we started renting cabins at Green River
Dang I miss them days when we had money, 2007 was the last time we went there, hell it was the last time we went anywhere, my wife hasn't taken a vacation since then, she has to use her vacation days as sick days & she use to get sick leave, but she used it all up from all my hospital stays since then, her sick leave goes to pay back what she owes, she had to borrow it after a while, just when she gets even with them I end up in the hospital for something, my B-day is coming up soon, I hope it's not like the last 2

I love how the memory of the food is so strong you can even still smell it! My aunt made the most WICKED potato salad. She can still make it but it's a hell of a lot of work. My wife and I have the recipe and NAILED it when we made it. So freakin' amazing. You have the worst breath the rest of the day but I couldn't care less. I could really go for a huge bowl of it right now!!
