Default The Volkswooden

Long time no see Volksrodders!

Warning: This is not a Cut, WELD, Drive, project, but rather a Cut, GLUE AND SCREW, Drive project.

During my absence a lot has happened including scrapping the plans for Herr General and moving on to something I've had in the back of my mind for a while. My father and I own a cabinet shop and had the wild idea to create a modified Thing-style roadster body for the vdub pan....completely out of wood! Sorry I was AWOL during the build, but now that it is actually done, I can share the whole process with ya.

Mocked up the body in cardboard to begin, then transferred that to varying thicknesses of Baltic Birch ply. Bondo and auto sealer, primer and paint to finish. I redesigned the Volkswagen script badge to say Volkswooden and had a buddy 3D print it for the decklid.

That's the basics and here are a few pics, but there's a ton more on the Flickr photostream, link below.

Enjoy!

Very cool build, how long did it take?

Always wondered why there were so few thing inspired volksrods. Seems like a vrod thing truck should exist. Maybe you could build one of those next.

Brilliant! Projects like yours make this site fun and interesting. At first I was going to make some tacky comment regarding termites, but I won't.

Not too many creaks yet, but a few dull clanks when you hit rough patches...kinda like cabinet doors in yer kitchen.

I've seen numerous VWs in wood and partial over the years with varying degrees of coolness. Yours is fantastic!

For your next project, you could use a different hardwood and build a, ahem, V-Oak's-Rod.

Wasn't too long if you condensed all the actual time building but actual start to finish was about 18 months. Building a mockup in cheap cardboard sure helped problem solve a handful of things.

Didn't actually weigh it so I don't have a number for ya, but just my dad and I were able to lift it off the dolly and place it on the pan...no doors or hood which would prob another 40 pounds or so.

Thanks, theVman. That would be a hilarious phone call..."Hello? Ikea? Yeah, I got this great idea for your next catalog..."
