Lightbulb A REALLY stupid question?

Ok, it's summer here in Texas. Bugs are HOT! A/C is nice but expensive and complicated.

How about putting a small (5000 BTU) electric window-style A/C unit in the back seat area, with a 12v to 120v power inverter? Hang the highest output alternator you can find on the engine. Do whatever duct/shrouding work is necessary (no back seat but who cares?), put in an appropriate drain, seal it off to blow cold air into the main interior and off you go!

I admit to not knowing much about the power requirements, but even the smallest window A/C unit would chill a bug down.

Anyone tried this? Results?

I'm not an AC expert but they blow a lot of hot air out the back. Just sitting it in the car without venting the back out would be pretty counter productive. Plus I don't even know if there is a strong enough Alt/Gen that would work. Probably have to get one custom made which I think is pretty expensive. I know there are some aftermarket under the dash "retro" units on the market but I've never looked them up. Good luck!!

Get a roof mount AC unit, like they use on trailers,
with a gas generator in the back seat.

Not a stupid question, but not a good solution either. Try google for DIY Portable air conditioner, lots of cheap, semi effective ideas.

You can also google putting a window unit in a car and see that's it's a really bad idea.

Venting the hot air out under the chassis wouldn't be a problem. I'm wondering more about powering it electrically. Does an inverter place a heavy load that one would feel? Back in the day I had some aircraft landing lights wired as my brights in my Corvair. When you hit the dimmer switch, the car would noticeably slow down! (Also burned the paint off the trunk of the car in front of me.)

You would have to look at the amperage of the inverter and go from there. I've only used an inverter when I used to drive Semi. I looked at Autozone and the VW alternators they sell are 30 amp. My Subaru has an 85 Amp alternator. I'm not sure how to figure it all out but I really have a lot of doubt a VW alt will run a inverter and if it would I doubt for very long.

I just looked and I am not sure if the Autozone is a generator or an alternator. It says alt but idk

If you really are interested in an AC take a look here. I know a VW will run a 12v fan.

I see ice machines for pretty cheap on Craigslist and a bag of ice is well under $3 a bag. Probably cheaper to do one of these then run the AC on most cars.

forget trying to cool the entire interior
just cool your self
I have two blue ice bricks
When I sit down in my car I put one at the small of my back and one between my thighs right up against my family jewells
it definatly makes driving a non A/C car easier even stop & go traffic summertime in Tucson AZ
\also look at this also there are lots of homebrew variations of this theme
